John Korn, Judy McGinnis, Rafi Sahakian, Paul Seils, John Sibrava, Marianthi Thanopoulos, Judy Thorne, Rachel Toeppen, Robert and Pat Usnik, Barbara and Steve VanArsdale. Not Attending: Tricia Fusilero, Gary and Paula Randant, Diana Sahakian, Mary Ann Sibrava, Irvana Wilks. Guests: None I.The meeting was called to order at 5:33 p.m. by Chair Judy Thorne. II. The minutes of the May 15, 2014 meeting minutes were approved by consensus on a motion by Skip Farley, seconded by Rafi Sahakian. III. Citizens to be heard: None. : IV.Mayor’s CommentsMayor Arlene Juracek asked everyone to continue to foster all relationships that we have with our friends in Sèvres. Arzelle LeGuin remains on staff at their city hall and is the one contact that we have there. V. Chair’s Comments: Judy Thorne announced that Mary Ann Sibrava was asked by Marilyn Genther, Director of the Mount Prospect Public Library, to speak at the Sunrise Rotary meeting Friday morning, July 18. She will talk about the library as well as Sister Cities, highlighting the events sponsored together by both organizations. VI. Treasurer’s Report: Skip Farley presented the report which was approved on his motion and seconded by Sahakian. The June 30, 2014 report listed total disbursements of $715.04 and a cash balance of $11,213.93 to date. VII. Committee Reports: Wine Tasting May 22 Final a. – Per Paula Randant’s written report, the event was deemed a “great success,” according to Paula Randant. It was short notice for the venue change from Cost Plus World Market to Fresh Thyme. Fresh Thyme provided the wine, cheese and staff to serve as well as a gift basket with wine and food to be raffled. Four gift cards were also raffled. Compared to last year, 70 people attended the event with attendance donations totaling $700. Raffle tickets and gift cards garnered $150. Fresh Thyme is willing to hold the event on premises again. The next date is Nov. 6, 2014. July 4 Parade FINAL b. – Gary Randant, who served as coordinator, submitted a th written report. The parade was deemed it a “worthwhile event.” Public Works provided a motorized cart and driver. Pesche’s provided the flowers. There was a Peace Pole on the float, which was accompanied by six Commission members: Gary and Paula Randant, Pat and Robert Usnik, Lorrie Huber and Steve VanArsdale. Family French Festival July 9 FINAL c. – John Sibrava reported for Mary Ann season. Total attendance included Sibrava, who coordinated this event, now in its 8 th 15 children, 11 adults and eight Commission members. Children ranged in age from 2 to 11 years of age, although most were between the ages of 3 to 7 years of age, which was the target audience. This was about half of last year’s family attendance, but enabled for one-on-one interaction with the Language Stars teacher. Sibrava’s report recommended continuing co-sponsoring this event as it promotes family awareness of Mount Prospect’s Sister City program. There also continues to be community interest in Language Stars’ French immersion experience for children. Book Crossing/Lectures Croisées 2014 – The Library kicked off this year’s events with a festive French display in the lobby from July 7-14. All 10 titles were on display along with information about related library programming, including family story time at the upcoming French Farmer’s Market in September with book discussions to feature books for elementary and secondary readers this fall. French Market Update – d. Marianthi Thanopoulos reported that the event was progressing with many repeat vendors interested in participating this year, but efforts are ongoing to reach out to more vendors. Interested vendors must pay in advance to commit to the event in September. She proposed publicizing the event via larger posters instead of brochures to save money. In addition, Thanopoulos recommended publicizing the event in Oaklee’s Family Guide as a featured event to reach families and via Facebook. Such a listing would cost $100. Sahakian moved to allocate the $100 for the placement in Oaklee’s Family Guide and $50 for online promo use, which was seconded by Judy McGinnis. In other action, Sahakian also moved to allocate $400 towards live musicians, seconded by Lorrie Huber. Thanopoulos will research available musicians. All motions passed. German Sister City Subcommittee e. – Skip Farley reported that the subcommittee is still trying to identify criteria a German Sister City should have, be it airport proximity, city population, etc. There is nothing definitive yet. The next meeting will be July 29. Brochure f. – no report French Cooking Lesson g. – Judy McGinnis recently met with Retro Bistro, which is excited to hold a cooking lesson/demo on a Sunday in October. Retro Bistro envisions presenting how to make a seasonal food item in 5 to 6 steps. The establishment has tables of 10 and can host up to 80 people. The lesson would be held from 3 to 5 pm after Sunday brunch. Retro Bistro is also seeking wine donations from its vendors. The costs to Retro Bistro were estimated at around $10. A motion by Bob Usnik and seconded by Rafi Sahakian was unanimously approved to hold the event Oct. 5 at Sèvres Intern VIII. - Christian de Goursac, the young man from Sèvres who requested an internship with the Village of Mount Prospect, has accepted a position with Aeroclub de France which is the main organizer of the Paris Air Show. He found out that the time was too short for him to go through the prerequisites for the needed visa. He would like to come next summer for one or two months. Facebook Connection IX. – Rafi Sahakian presented his recommendation, which was approved on his motion and seconded by Steve VanArsdale, to create a Facebook page dedicated to the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission and its activities,. Sahakian volunteered to be the site administrator and Evelyn Dorman volunteered to help with any French used on the site for grammatical accuracy. The Facebook page would serve as a way to promote the upcoming French market with links to participating vendors, Sèvres, activity calendar and photos. Sahakian asked everyone with a Facebook account to share this site once it is up and running. Open Discussion X. : None XI.
