MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION

Minutes: July 17, 2014
Attendees: Mayor Arlene Juracek, Evelyn Dorman, Janice and Skip Farley, Lorrie Huber, A.
John Korn, Judy McGinnis, Rafi Sahakian, Paul Seils, John Sibrava, Marianthi Thanopoulos,
Judy Thorne, Rachel Toeppen, Robert and Pat Usnik, Barbara and Steve VanArsdale.
Not Attending: Tricia Fusilero, Gary and Paula Randant, Diana Sahakian, Mary Ann Sibrava,
Irvana Wilks.

I.The meeting was called to order by at 5:33 p.m.
II.The minutes of the May 15, 2014, meeting minutes were approved by consensus
on a motion by Skip Farley, seconded by Rafi Sahakian.
III. Citizens to be heard: None.
IV. : Mayor Arlene Juracek asked everyone to continue to foster
all relationships that we have with our friends in Sèvres. Arzelle LeGuin remains on
staff at their city hall and is the one contact that we have there.
V. Judy Thorne announced that Mary Ann Sibrava was asked by
Marilyn Guenther, head librarian at the Mount Prospect Public Library to speak
at the Sunrise Rotary meeting Friday morning, July 18. She will talk about the library
as well as Sister Cities, highlighting the events sponsored together by both
organizations.

VII. Committee Reports:
a. Wine Tasting May 22 Final he event was
according to Paula Randant. It was short notice for the
venue change from Cost Plus World Market to Fresh Thyme. Fresh Thyme provided
the wine, cheese and staff to serve as well as a gift basket with wine and food to
be raffled. Four gift cards were also raffled. Compared to last year, 70 people
attended the event with attendance donations totaling $700. Raffle tickets and gift
cards garnered $150. Fresh Thyme is willing to hold the event on premises again.

b. July 4 Parade FINAL Gary Randant, who served as coordinator, submitted a

Randant, Pat and Robert Usnik, Lorrie Huber and Steve VanArsdale.
c. Family French Festival July 9 FINAL John Sibrava reported for Mary Ann
Sibrava, who coordinated this event, now in its 8 season. Total attendance included

15 children, 11 adults and eight Commission members. Children ranged in age from
2 to 11 years of age, although most were between the ages of 3 to 7 years of age,
which was the target audience.

Book Crossing/Lectures Croisées 2014
with a festive French display in the lobby from July 7-14. All 10 titles were on display
along with information about related library programming, including family story time
feature books for elementary and secondary readers this fall.
d. French Market Update Marianthi Thanopoulos reported that the event was
progressing with many repeat vendors interested in participating this year, but efforts
are ongoing to reach out to more vendors. Interested vendors must pay in advance to
commit to the event in September. She proposed publicizing the event via larger
posters instead of brochures to save money.
In addition, Thanopoulos
Guide as a featured event to reach families and via Facebook. Such a listing would
Family Guide and $50 for online promo use, which was seconded by Judy McGinnis.
In other action, Sahakian also moved to allocate $400 towards live musicians,
seconded by Lorrie Huber. Thanopoulos will research available musicians. All
motions passed.
e. German Sister City Subcommittee Skip Farley reported that the subcommittee
is still trying to identify criteria a German Sister City should have, be it airport
proximity, city population, etc. There is nothing definitive yet. The next meeting will
be July 29.
f. Brochure no report
g. French Cooking Lesson Judy McGinnis recently met with Retro Bistro, which is
excited to hold a cooking lesson/demo on a Sunday in October. Retro Bistro envisions
presenting how to make a seasonal food item in 5 to 6 steps. The establishment has
tables of 10 and can host up to 85 people. The lesson would be held from 3 to 5 p.m.
after Sunday brunch. Retro Bistro is also seeking wine donations from its vendors.
The costs to Retro Bistro were estimated at around $10. A motion by Bob Usnik and
seconded by Rafi Sahakian was unanimously approved to hold the event Oct. 5.
VIII. Sèvres Intern - Christian de Goursac, the young man from Sèvres who requested an
internship with the Village of Mount Prospect, has accepted a position with Aeroclub
de France which is the main organizer of the Paris Air Show. He found out that
the time was too short for him to go through the prerequisites for the needed visa.
He would like to come next summer for one or two months.
IX. Facebook Connection Rafi Sahakian presented his recommendation, which was
approved on his motion and seconded by Steve VanArsdale, to create a Facebook page
dedicated to the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission and its activities,.
Sahakian volunteered to be the site administrator and Evelyn Dorman volunteered to
help with any French used on the site for grammatical accuracy. The Facebook page
would serve as a way to promote the upcoming French market with links to
participating vendors, Sèvres, activity calendar and photos. Sahakian asked everyone
with a Facebook account to share this site once it is up and running.
X. Open Discussion: None
XI. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:12 p.m. The next
meeting will be Sept. 18, 5:30 p.m.
