A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE
CONTRIBUTIONS OF MICHAEL SEMKIU
TO THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU has served the Village of Mount Prospect faithfully and with great distinction
for more than 31 years, beginning his career as a member of the Mount Prospect Police Department April 1,
1983, as a patrol officer; promoted to the rank of Sergeant on May 15, 1998, promoted to the rank of
Commander on June 4, 2002, promoted to the rank of Deputy Police Chief on July 6, 2004, and finally, to the
rank of Chief of Police on June S, 2012; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU has exemplified the utmost standards of public service and stewardship as he
led the Police Department providing diverse programs and services essential to the safety and quality of life
for all citizens of Mount Prospect; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of MICHAEL SEMKIU, the Police Department's incorporation of technology
expanded and progressed to meet the growing needs of the department and the residents of the Village of
Mount Prospect; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU successfully maintained the budget of the Police Department for a decade by
balancing the need for fiscal conservativeness with the need to deliver effective and efficient professional
police services; and
WHEREAS, through his leadership, management, and dedication, MICHAEL SEMKIU undertook the
management and development of the department's policies and procedures in the 1990's and 2000's, resulting
in maintaining the Police Department's status as an accredited law enforcement agency through the
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) over a 12 year period, ensuring
professional police services would be delivered by the members of the Police Department; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU provided guidance, leadership, and representation in such multi -
jurisdictional agencies as the Major Case Assistance Team Task Force, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System,
Northwest Central Dispatch System, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, North Suburban Chiefs of Police
Association, and the Northwest Police Academy; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, MICHAEL SEMKIU served as a representative for the North
Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police on the board of the Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic
Violence and received Senate Recognition from the State of Illinois in 2012; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, MICHAEL SEMKIU served as a representative for the North
Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police on the Cook County Children's Advocacy Center Board; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU received many awards and honors throughout his career exemplifying a
consummate work ethic thus garnering him such awards as two certificates of exceptional performance, one
honorable mention, two department commendations, Officer of the Quarter for the 4' quarter of 1992, and
Runner -Up Officer of the Year in 1993; and
WHEREAS, demonstrative of his leadership and dedication to the law enforcement profession,
MICHAEL SEMKIU received the Cook County Sheri
's Award of Merit; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU received Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety, Public Safety
Executive Leadership Award honoring his commitment to obtaining advance management and leadership
education; and
WHEREAS, MICHAEL SEMKIU will retire from service to the Village of Mount Prospect on June 17, 2014.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE
OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION ONE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby
acknowledge the many lasting contributions of MICHAEL SEMKIU during his more than 31 years of
outstanding service to our Village and its residents.
SECTION TWO: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby express
their heartfelt appreciation to MICHAEL SEMKIU and his wife, Rosann, for their sincere devotion to the
Village and do further extend best wishes to them for happiness in their future years.
SECTION THREE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby declare
Thursday, June 12, 2014 as "Michael Semkiu Day" in the Village of Mount Prospect.
SECTION FOUR: That a copy of this Resolution be represented to MICHAEL SEMKIU as a permanent
record of the recognition, respect and reverence expressed herein.
SECTION FIVE That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval
in the manner provided by law.
