Background
The Television Services Department's, 3 Sony DSR -400A Broadcast Camcorders, has been slat(
during the 2013 Calendar year. Staff wishes to purchase 3 Sony PMW -320K SD /HD Camcorders. This Camcorder
was rolled out by Sony in late 2010 and has been a very favorably reviewed Camcorder by those that have been
using it. Sony has stated that they are committed to continue producing the Camcorder for two more years and
supporting it for seven years after that.
Summary of quotes received
Adorama @ $26,970; B &H Photo/Video @ $26,970; Full Compass @ 26,971.34.
Discussion
The PMW -320K Camcorder is the only camcorder in its price range that captures video in SD (Standard Definition)
and HD (High Definition.) While we know the cable providers will require two HD broadcast channels, they have not
yet set a date. This purchase will allow us to move gradually while converting our programming from SD to HD.
The PMW -320K Camcorder is compatible with camera batteries, on camera lighting equipment, field monitors, and
wireless microphone systems currently utilized by the TV Services Department.
This camcorder uses a tapeless capture system. The videotape playback systems currently owned by MPTV are
aging and breaking down. Staff would not have to replace the broken tape playback systems, which is a cost savings.
Staff has had good performance in the past with its Sony products and they have needed very little maintenance.
Action Requested
Staff requests the waiving of the bid process due to the specialized nature of the camcorders.
Staff recommends the approval of purchase of 3 Sony PMW -320K Camcorders in the amount of $26,970 from B &H
Photo/Video. Staff has purchased and worked with B &H Photo/Video in the past and they have performed well over
the years.
