MAYORS REPORT 02/17/2004 PROCLAMA TION "AMERICAN HEART MONTH" FEBRUARY, 2004 WHEREAS, the month of February has been appropriately named American Hearth Month by the American Heart Association; and WHEREAS, this year the American Heart Association is attempting to raise awareness of the number one cause of death for women in the state of Illinois, with 1 in 29 women's deaths being caused by breast cancer, while 1 in 24 deaths is from cardiovascular disease; and WHEREAS, it is critical to empower women and increase their awareness of steps they can take to reduce their risk of heart disease; and WHEREAS, the American Heart Association works every day to advance medical research, spread lifesaving knowledge and reaching out to people of all ages, to ensure stronger, longer lives for you and your loved ones. NOw, THEREFORE, L Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor Pro Tem of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February, 2004 to be "AMERICAN HEART MONTH" and I urge all citizens, especially women in Mount Prospect to familiarize themselves with the signs, symptoms, and treatments for cardiovascular disease so that we might begin to reduce the devastating impact it has upon our population, particularly our mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and other women. Lowe Village Clerk Dated this 1 t" day of February, 2004. -~_._.".,. ., PROCLAMA TION "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" FEBRUARY, 2004 WHEREAS, African-American history is one of the great human chronicles of all time; and WHEREAS, African-American history is the story of men and women whose ancestors arrived on these shores in chains, but with extreme courage and faith, I prevailed against centuries of slavery and discrimination to build lives for I themselves and their families, and to contribute to the strength and character of our i nation; and WHEREAS, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which was expanded to an entire month in 1976, therefore the month of February has been nationally designated as a time to recognize and celebrate contributions of African- Americans to our nation's culture and history; and WHEREAS, as we recognize BLACK HISTORY MONTH, let us resolve to see that every American shares equal access to opportunitiesfor personal growth, and let us strive to eliminate even the most minute evidence of discrimination towards all individuals. NO W, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor Pro Tem of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February, 2004 as "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" and I encourage all citizens to take advantage of opportunities to educate themselves and raise awareness and appreciation of the history and contributions of African-Americans to our great nation.
