PROCLAMATION
ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF
DURGA PUJA
OCTOBER 9-13, 2013
WHEREAS,
the Village of Mount Prospect has on several occasions issued proclamations in
memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, the state-sponsored, systematic
persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between
1933 and 1945, and in memory of the rescuers and liberators of its victims; and
WHEREAS,
the issuance of those proclamations has afforded an opportunity to reflect on the
moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and to actively rededicate
ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and
WHEREAS,
we the people of the Village of Mount Prospect have proclaimed to always
remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution
and tyranny; and
WHEREAS,
we the citizens of Mount Prospect have proclaimed that we should work to promote
human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs; and
WHEREAS,
the Hindu feast of Durga Puja
being celebrated this year on October 9-13, affords us an opportunity to reaffirm and rededicate
ourselves to these principles, by recognizing that anti-minority and anti-Hindu laws such as the
Vested Property Act enacted in Bangladesh prevent many Hindus from celebrating Durga Puja,
which recognizes the triumph of Good over Evil; and
WHEREAS,
scant attention is being paid to the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus who live each day
in fear of atrocities being committed against them for their religious beliefs.
NOW THEREFORE, I,
Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect hereby
declare October 9-13, 2013, as
AND RE-
in memory and recognition of all victims of violations of human rights, past and present. I further
proclaim the Village of Mou and our encouragement
of efforts to stop such persecution; and I affirm our recognition that the lack of notoriety given to
any particular human rights violations does not make them any less abhorrent.
