MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION

Minutes: July 18, 2013

Guests Mike Janonis, Evelyn Dorman, an interested resident who is a French teacher at
Evanston High School, introduced by Marianthi Thanopoulos
I. The meeting was called to order by Chair Dorothy Kucera at 5:40 p.m.
II. The minutes from the May 16, 2013, meeting were approved by consensus on a motion by
Skip Farley, seconded by Rachel Toeppen.
III. Citizens to be heard: None.
IV. Mayor's Comments: Mayor Juracek was not in attendance.
V. Chair's Comments: None
VI. Treasurer's Report: Skip Farley presented the report which was approved on his motion,
seconded by John Korn. Mike Janonis responded to questions about accounting and reported
that all expenses incurred by the commission will be charged to that account. The Village
Board approved this year's contribution of $5,000 in support of the official visit by the
Sevres delegation.
VII. Committee Reports:
a. Wine Tasting, May 23 - Paula Randant presented the final event form and
mentioned how well the collaboration with World Market works. 37 people attended
and the raffle basket donated by World Market raised an additional $360 for a total of
$730. She also recommended that entry tickets be sold in advance with a donation of
$15 at the door. Judy Thorne suggested that raffle tickets also be sold in advance, if
possible.
b. July 4th Parade - Paula Randant reported that she and Gary Randant carried the
banners along with the help of two relatives who happened to be visiting. She
passionately asked that more commissioners participate in the future.

c. Family French Festival, July 10 - Mary Ann Sibrava presented the final event
form and praised the success of the Language Stars program. Registration was
exceeded and the number of no -shows was compensated by walk -ins. The total
attendees were 26 children and 36 adults who also enjoyed apple juice and animal
crackers. Attendance numbers have declined, but it was noted that the program was
finally attracting the appropriate group of attendees.
d. Book Crossing 2013 - Mary Ann Sibrava reported that the kick -off week began
July 8. A staff member was by the table display handing out creme puffs and assisting
patrons in selecting the available books, many of which were then checked out. She
hopes to add selections for 7 -8 -year -olds, which are not currently offered.
e. French Farmers Market, September 15 - Marianthi Thanopoulos reported on
the progress of organizing this event which is new to her as well as to Barbara
VanArsdale and Judy McGinnis, new co- chairs. Previous vendors were alerted in
April to the date, and Marianthi Thanopoulos is soliciting additional vendors found by
Judy McGinnis and herself. She is also looking for musicians and a stilt - walker. The
vendor fee has been raised to $35. It was also suggested that Mount Prospect Police be
asked to help with directing traffic. Marianthi Thanopoulos will be giving the
Commission the tools to organize this event, so that in the future it will be done as a
Sister Cities Commission event with all expenses charged to the commission.
VIII. 2013 Sevres visit to Mount Prospect - Paula Randant reported on the latest work done
by the subcommittee, the meeting minutes of which will be available soon. The
price of the Farewell Banquet will remain at $40, and the trolley owned by
Victoria on the Lake will be used to transport the group more conveniently to and
from Chicago at a lower cost than the train and water taxi. The Fire Dept. bus and
a Village van will be used to and from the airport as well as other times during
the week.
IX. Open discussion: None
X. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:16 p.m. The September
meeting was cancelled at the May meeting, so the next meeting will be November 21,
2013, at 5:30 p.m.
