A RESOL UTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF
IR VA NA K. WILKS
TO THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS has been a resident of the Village of Mount
Prospect for the past 44 years, moving here in 1969 with her husband Alan and
daughter John; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS has been an active, caring and giving friend,
neighbor, mother and citizen throughout her many years in the Village; and
WHEREAS, a respected community leader, IRVANA K. WILKS is a woman of
any "hats "; professional writer, published poet, political activist, church elder,
olunteer, constitutional resource and the only Mayor in Mount Prospect history
to hold a second - degree black belt in judo, and
WHEREAS, forever passionate about service to others IRVANA K. WILKS has
supported a number of community -based organizations including Mount Prospect
iwanis Club, United Way of Mount Prospect - Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect
Friends of the Library and the Mount Prospect Interfaith Council; and
WHEREAS, with an unwavering passion, IRVANA K. WILKS has served in
leadership roles on numerous local and county organizations dedicated to enhance
local government and civic responsibility; Cook County Economic Development
Advisory Committee, Northwest Housing Partnership, Northwest Municipal
Conference, Metropolitan Mayor's Caucus, League of Women Voters and precinct
captain of the Elk Grove Republicans; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS has been intimately involved in the thoughtful
development of the Village of Mount Prospect beginning with her appointment by
then Mayor Carolyn Krause to the Mount Prospect Business District Development
and Redevelopment Commission; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, IRVANA K. WILKS ran a successful campaign for the
office of Village Trustee and was resoundingly re- elected to office in 1995, 1999
and 2003; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, IRVANA K. WILKS was duly elected Mayor of the Village
of Mount Prospect and in 2009 was elected to her second and what is her final
term as Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS has worked in collaboration and partnership
with governmental organizations to strengthen and unify efforts dedicated to sound
legislative and environmental practices; O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission,
Joint Action Water Agency, Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, Des
Plaines River Watershed Planning Council, North Cook County Soil and Water
Conservation District; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS while serving as Mayor of the Village of Mount
Prospect, championed a Village -wide flood control program that will help to
substantially reduce the incidence of basement and overland flooding including
her unwavering determination to see Levee 37 to completion; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K WILKS, consistently, in the midst of economic
transitions and challenges, maintained a fiscally conservative approach to funding
'local government operations that has resulted in maintaining Mount Prospect as
an affordable and livable community; and
WHEREAS, during her years in office, IRVANA K WILKS has promoted and
o verseen many extensive redevelopment initiatives, including the construction and
revitalization ofRandhurst Village in 2011; and
WHEREAS, under the auspice of IRVANA K WILKS, the Sister Cities
relationship with Sevres, France has remained vibrant with numerous ongoing
civic and cultural exchanges; and
WHEREAS, through her responsiveness to the citizenry, through her dedication
and leadership, and through her intense love for this community the Village of
Mount Prospect remains one of the most desirable communities in the northwest
suburbs including recognition as the "Best Place in the Nation to Raise Kids " in
2008 and home of Lee DeWyze, American Idol winner in 2010.
OW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
F THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
S ECTION ONE: That the Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect
along with the community do hereby acknowledge and recognize IRVANA K.
WILKS for her years of service to the community and wish her and with Alan a
long and fulfilling future.
7TION TWO That APRIL 26, 2013 is hereby declared, IRVANA K WILKS
Y, in the Village of Mount Prospect.
7TION THREE That an official copy of this Resolution be suitably prepared
presented to IRVANA K. WILKS as a perpetual memento.
SECTION FOUR That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
