MAYORS REPORT 10/7/03PROCLAMATION "PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" OCTOBER, 2002 WHEREAS, the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, was fbunded in 1992 by Kathleen Casey, when she realized the need to address the ever increasing number of pediatric cancer cases; and WHEREAS, pediatric cancer is the number one cause of death by disease and has stricken over 41,000 of ozn' children in the last five years; and WHERIz24S, pediatric cancer is a national illness, with over 12, 400 children being diagnosed annually; and WHEREAS, by calling attention and awareness to the needs of pediatric cancer patients, local organizations are committed to raising fitnds to encourage, supplement, and initiate research related to pediatric cancer diseases; and WHEREAS, awareness of the nee& of children afflicted with cancer taus! be recognized and served with research, patient programs, and facilities; and WHEREAS, rendering of quality pediatric cancer services begins with knowledge to cultivate awareness. Proclamation "International Hispanic/Latino Mental Health Week" October 6 - 10, 2003 WHEREAS. the International Hispanic/Latino Mental Heahh Week Caml)aig~z was created in 1993 in re,s7~ot~se to the lack of resoz~rces ami informatio~ available for Spanish-speaking residents sz~kring fi'om mental health problems a~d sz~bstance abz~se; and WHEREAS, the campaign features workshoI)s and lectures ]br commzmitv residents and prq/'essionals, mental h'ealth screening, and i~!/brmational brochures and behavioral health iss~es; and WHEREAS, the Latino Family Institute, in collaboration with the Illi~ois Department of Hmnan Services, commtmity providers and community rexide~,ts, donates time, .V~ace, and services to make the campaign a stwcess; WHEREAS, the campaign strives to increase awareness of the memal health and sttbstance abz~se treatment needs of Hispanic/Latinos, increase access to bicult,tral and bilit~gua[ treatment through fi'ee mental health screenings, and to increase co~npetence in the treatment of Hispanics/Latinos throttgh lect~tres a~zd workshops. PROCLAMATION "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" OCTOBER 5-11, 2003 WltEREA& fire kills 3,500 to 4, 000 people in the United States each 3,ear and 80 to 85% c~/'all fire deaths occur in the home; and WItEREAS, taking shnple s~¢kty precautions, such as ident(~,ing and removing eve~Tday home fire hazards, can help prevent the majority of home fires and fire deaths; and WltEREA& proper installation, testing, and maintenance of smoke alarms are all part ora thorough home fire escape plan; WtlEREAS, developing a home fire escapeplan, and practicing it at least twice a year, are critical to escaping a real fire safely'; and WIIEREAS. the Fire Prevention Week 2003 theme "Get Out, Stay Out," motiYates children and fi~milies to work together to conduct a home fire hazard hunt, to develop and practice a home fire escape plan, and to install and test smoke ala~vns; and WtlEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department of the Village of Mount Prospect is committed to the safety ofli[k and prot;ertyfi*om devastating g/)~ects offire; and FFIIEREAS, the members of the fire deparonent are joined by other concerned citizens cdr Mount Prospect, as w ell a s other emergency service providers a nd s aJ~,O: advocates, businesses, schools, service clubs and organizations hr their fire safety e/forts. Farle% Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the week of October 5-11, 2003 as "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" in the Village, and l call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work, and school, and to take the steps needed to make their homes and families safe from the leading causes of home fires. PROCLAMATION "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" OCTOBER, 2003 WHEREAS. violence against women and children continues to become a more t;~ evalent problem; and WttEREAS, the t~roblem of domestic violence is not confined to a~o; group qf people, but crosses all economic, gender, racial and societal barriers, and is supported by societal indifference; and WttEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an indivkhtal 's privacy, dignity, security and humanity through the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control and/or abuse; and WtlEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide-ranging, directly c(fecting fimfilies and society as a whole; and WltEREAS, it is battered women themseh,'es who have been at the fi;rc~'ont of' efforts to bring peace and equity to the home; and WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special time to bring this issue to the attention o fall residents of Mount Prospec~ so they can become better informed and involved in programs to eliminate this epidemic from our society. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GeraM L. Farley, Mayor of the Vilktge of Mount Pro.spect, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2003 as "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" and I encourage everyone ,,vithin the Village to join forces Mth victim service programs, crim#ml fitstice officials, and concerned citizens across the country to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
