HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/06/2003 CRC minutes MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION 2ND Floor Conference Room, Public Safety Building Thursday, February 6, 2003 7:00 p.m. The meeting of the Community Relations Commission ICRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect was held Thursday, February 6, 2003 in the second floor conference room of the Public Safety Building, 112 East Northwest Highway, Mount Prospect, Ilinois. CALL TO ORDER Chairman John Brennan called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman John Brennan Commissioner Judi Muniz Commissioner Pankaj Parikh Commissioner Anthony Tolbert Absent Commissioner Barbara Muench Village Staff: Human Services Director Nancy Morgan Human Services Social Worker Nina Persino Staff Liaison Lisa Angell NEW BUSINESS In consideration of Ms. Morgan's and Ms. Perino's schedules New Business preceded Approval of Minutes.) Overview of the Village of Mount Prospect Human Services Department - Programs and Services Nancy Morgan, Human Services Director provided a comprehensive overview including a brief history of the Department. The Human Services (Division) was established in the mid 1970's to provide activities for senior citizens. Since that time the Human Services Department has expanded its scope to include four (4) major program areas. 1 ) Social Services 2) Nursing Health 3) Senior Recreation Activities 4) Youth Activities Ms. Morgan identified an extensive list of programs and services provided in each of these areas. She stated that the Department is well represented in a number of local and regional agencies, which enhances their ability to make appropriate referrals should a resident's needs go beyond their services. Ms. Morgan also credited the Village's strong interdepartmental communication/cooperation in identifying and coordinating services to meet the needs of Iow-income and at risk families. Ms, Persino continued the presentation with an overview of services and programs specifically designed to meet the needs of the Village's Hispanic community. In addition to the services provided Ms. Persino also talked about some of the concerns, problems, and challenges faced by Hispanic families. She stated that St. Cecilia's Church sponsors the ocal Hispanic Ministry and that the Ministry is an ~mportant resource in the Hispanic community. Ms. Persino also talked about the Mentor Program and the positive impact it has on at risk children. And, like Police Chief Eddingtion she talked about the benefits of a proposed Neighborhood Resource Center. The Commission shared many positive comments about the level of services provided and asked what role the Commission could play in support of the Hisoanic Ministry and other programs. Ms, Persino stated she would pose this question to the Ministry Coordinator, Father Sonny de Rivera. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion to approve the January 6, 2002 meeting minutes was moved and seconded. The minutes were unanimously approved as written. Motion carried. 2000 CENSUS The Commission thought the report was a valuable source for development and implementation of services designed to meet the needs of the VilIage's diverse population. THER BUSINESS · Racism And Sensitivity Workshop Chairman Brennan distributed information regarding the Racism and Sensitivity Workshop scheduled for the March 8~n weekend in Mundelein He encouraged the Commission members to review the information and consider attending the workshop, Village Diversity Training Program Chairman Brennan recommended the Commission learn about the diversity-training program conducted for School District #214. Several of the school district's participants who completed the training are receptive to conducting a local diversity - training program. The Commission suggested a representative from the school district be invited to the April Commission meeting to talk about the program. Chairman Brennan will make the appropriate contacts. Report to Mayor Farley and Village Board Chairman Brennan distributed a draft of his report of the Commission's activities since their first meeting ~n October 2002 for the members review. Discussion of the draft report will be on the March agenda. ADJOURNMENT The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, March 6t~, 2003, 7:00 p.m. in the Public Safety Building. [Ms. Angell will check availability of the Public Safety Training room for the March meeting.] There being no further business a motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.
