MAYORS REPORT 2/4/03PROCLAMATION "BE4 CK HIS TORY MONTH" FEBRUARY, 2003 WHEREAS, African-American history is one of the great human chronicles of all time; and WHEREAS, African-American history is &e story of men and women whose ancestors arrived on these shores in chains, but with extreme courage and faith, prevailed against centuries of slavery and discrimination to build lives for themselves and their families, and to contribute immeasurably to the strength and character o four nation; and WHEREAS, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which was expanded to an entire month in 1976; and WHEREAS, February has been nationally designated as a time to recognize and celebrate contributions of African-Americans to our nation s culture and history, and WHEREAS, in every facet of United States history, African-Americans have made contributions, adding significantly to the strength of our nation; and WHEREAS, as we recognize BLACK HISTORY MONTH, let us resolve to see that every American shares equal access to opportunities for personal growthand let us strive to eliminate even the most minute evidence of discrimination towards all individuals. NOW, THEREFORE, L Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February, 2003 as BIACK HISTORY MONTH and I encourage all citizens to take advantage of opportunities to educate themselves and raise awaren ess and appreciation of the history and contributions of African-A mericans to our great nation.
