MAYORS REPORT 10/01/02PROCLAMATION "PEDI,4 TRIC C,4NCER .4 WARENE$S MONTH" OCTOBER, 2002 WHEREAS, the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, was founded in 1992 by Kathleen Casey, when she realized the need to address the ever increasing number of pediatric cancer cases; and WHEREAS, pediatric cancer is the number one cause of death by disease and has stricken over 41,000 of our children in the last five years; and WHEREAS, pediatric cancer is a national illness, with over 12, 400 children being diagnosed annually; and WHEREAS, by calling attention and awareness to the needs of pediatric cancer patients, local organizations are committed to raising funds to encourage, supplement, and initiate research related to pediatric cancer diseases; and WHEREAS, awareness of the needs of children afflicted with cancer must be recognized and served with research, patient programs, and facilities; and WHEREAS, rendering of quality pediatric cancer services begins with knowledge to cultivate awareness. NOW,, THEREFORE, I, Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2002 as "PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" and I urge all citizens to strive to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. Proclamation "International Hispanic/Latino Mental Health Week" October 6 - 12, 2002 WHEREAS, the International Hispanic/Latino Mental Health Week Campaign was created in 1993 in response to the lack of resources and information available for Spanish-speaking residents suffering from mental health problems and substance abuse; and WHEREAS, the campaign features workshops and lectures for community residents and professionals, mental health screening, and informational brochures and behavioral health issues; and WHEREAS, the Latino Family Institute, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Human Services, community providers and community residents, donates time, space, and services to make the campaign a success; WHEREAS, the campaign strives to increase awareness of the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs of Hispanic/Latinos, increase access to bicultural and bilingual treatment through free mental health screenings, and to increase competence in the treatment of Hispanics/Latinos through lectures and workshops. NOW, THEREFORE, L Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim October 6-12, 2002 to be "INTERNATIONAL HISPANIC/LA TINO MENTAL HEAL TH WEEK" and l urge all citizens to strive to raise awareness of the mental health issues in the Hispanic/Latino community. PR 0 CLAMA TION "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" OCTOBER 6-12, 2002 WHEREAS, fire kills 3,500 to 4, O00 people in the United States each year and 80 to 85% of all fire deaths occur in the home; and WHEREAS, taking simple safety precautions, such as identifying and removing everyday home fire hazards, can help prevent the majority ofhome fires and fire deaths; and WHEREAS, proper installation, testing, and maintenance of smoke alarms are all part of a thorough home fire escape plan; WHEREAS, developing a home fire escape plan, and practicing it at least twice a year, are critical to escaping a real fire safely; and WHEREAS, the Fire Prevention Week 2002 theme "Team Up For Fire Safety, "motivates children and families to work together to conduct a home fire hazard hunt, to develop and practice a home fire escape plan, and to install and test smoke alarms; and WHEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department of the Village of Mount Prospect is committed to the safety of life and propertyfrom devastating effects offire; and WHEREAS, the members of the fire department are joined by other concerned citizens of Mount Prospect, as well as other emergency service providers and safety advocates, businesses, schools, service clubs and organizations in their fire safety efforts, NOW, THEREFORE, L Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the week of October 6~12, 2002 as aFIRE PREVENTION WEEK" in the Village, and I call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work, and school, and to take the steps needed to make their homes and families safe from the leading causes of home fires. PR 0 CLAMA TION "NATIONAL COMMUNITY ED UCA TION DA Y" OCTOBER 10, 2002 WHEREAS, lifelong learning experiences for all communiO~ members, regardless of age, is the foundation of community education; and WHEREAS, District 214 Community Education fosters partnerships with other organizations and agencies to provide lifelong learning experiences for every member of the community, from early childhood to the elderly, from those learning English to those learning computer skills; and WHEREAS, the community school which is often open evenings, weekends, and during the summer, is a focalpoint for community activities, services, and community involvement; and WHEREAS, District 214 Community Education has positively affected the quality of life for thousands of community members each year since 1986 by providing services and opportum'ties for learning; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Mount Prospect are committed to meeting the educational, health, social services, cultural, and recreational needs o fall members of the community. NOW, THEREFORE, L Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2002 as "NATIONAL COMMUNITY ED UCA TION DA Y' in the Village of Mount Prospect and I urge all residents of Mount Prospect to support community education, to become involved, and to receive services that are offered. PR 0 ¢£AMA TION "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" OCTOBER, 2002 WHEREAS, violence against women and children continues to become a more prevalent problem; and WHEREAS, the problem of domestic violence is not confined to any group of people, but crosses all economic, gender, racial and societal barriers, and is supported by societal indifference; and WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual ' s privacy, dignity, security and humanity through the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control and/or abuse; and WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide-ranging, directly affecting families and society as a whole; and WHEREAS, it is battered women themselves who have been at the forefront of efforts to bring peace and equity to the home; and WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special time to bring this issue to the attention of all residents of Mount Prospect so they can become better informed and involved in programs to eliminate this epidemic from our society. NO W, THEREFORE, I, Gerald £. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2002 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and I encourage everyone within the Village to join forces with victim service programs, criminal justice officials, and concerned citizens across the country to observe Domestic Violence Awareness 3/bnth.
