Mr. & Mrs. Hanson explained that the home behind them has been performing automobile
maintenance work for over 4 years. Due to the continual stream of different vehicles, it is their
feeling that this is a business endeavor rather than a homeowner fixing their personal cars. The
Hansons went on to explain the noise and odors that result fi.om the work. There are also
automobiles occasionally parked on the street with for sale signs on them. Mr. & Mrs. Hanson
have had discussions with the neighbor in the house that is performing this work, but these
discussions have led to verbal abuse from the neighbor. The police have been called in the past
with temporary success at controlling an ongoing problem. Board members advised the Hansons
that they would have this issue brought to the attention of the police administration for further
investigation.
Carol Tortorello presented a graphic representation of a proposed vehicle sticker that illustrated
30 years of blood drive work in Mount Prospect.
Ms. Tortorello also brought up the increase in door-to-door solicitors. Dave Strahl explained that
a recent Supreme Court ruling now prohibits the Village from regulating these solicitors. Village
Attorney Everette Hill is researching this issue.
Kevin Bolga brought up the issue of gopeds. He feels that these vehicles are dangerous to
children, bikers and joggers because of the inability to see them and their ability to reach speeds
of up to 30 mph. Mr. Bolga went on to describe an incident that he was recently involved where
four children on gopeds attempted to pass him as he traveled in his car westbound on Gregory
Street towards Route 83. Ray Rubio went on to support Mr. Bolga's concern that there are
several children on gopeds that continually hang out near Gregory Street and Fairview Avenue.
Mayor Farley told Mr. Bolga that the Village Board would be discussing this issue at next
Tuesday's (August 13) Board meeting. Mr. Bolga stated that he would be in attendance. Dave
Strahl provided Mr. Bolga with an August 8 Board packet.
avid Shein described a concern that he just became aware of during last week's Youth
Commission meeting. He described that youths have the ability to purchase butane refill
cartridges at the Rags Store in Randhurst. Though he is not sure how the youths are using this
product, Mr. Shein was concerned about the potential.
Mr. Shein explained that he was in no way connected to the attack squirrels that are receiving
media attention.
Mr. Shein recommended that the local access television consider public service announcements
about the West Nile Disease. The Village newsletter may be another source for information to
the residents.
Mr. Shein informed those in attendance that there is an unmarked truck that travels throughout
his neighborhood selling new furniture. They apparently drive slowly on Village streets and lure
people over to look at furniture supposedly from North Carolina.
Mr. Shein circulated a pamphlet explaining Mitigation Planning.
Mr. Shein asked if members of Village-sponsored Commissions were covered by legal
insurance. He recently contacted his insurance carder about extra umbrella coverage and the
insurance salesman indicated that he would have to get back to Mr. Shein because of his
affiliation with the Youth Commission.
Mike Junius commented about a recent incident that he observed and called 911 for police.
While at the Pharaohs Apartments on June 9 he noticed a carload of young adults driving around
the complex with open alcohol. He called 911 at 6:32 and then again at 6:46 when the police did
not arrive. The police were able to stop the car and question the occupants. Mr. Junius went on
to explain that he saw the police empty the open beer cans and allow the full, unopened cans to
remain in the auto. Mr. Junius is concerned that the driver of the car was not charged with any
violation. It is his concern that the driver was released and not charged because he was Hispanic,
He also explained that the auto had a broken windshield that should have received a citation.
Would like this issue brought to the Police Chief's attention for review.
Marta Hulseberg expressed concern that her driveway was damaged in May during Maple
Street road construction. She called Public Works on several occasions and someone from Public
Works has been out to look at the damage and has agreed to patch. Her concern is that the
driveway has not been repaired. Trustee Skowron explained that what is probably happening is
that Public Works is waiting until a crew is in the area. Public Works will be notified and she
will receive a follow-up telephone call or visit.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 am.
Respectfully submitted,
Michael Figolah
