A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE
CONTRIBUTIONS OF JOHN K. DAHLBERG
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG has served the Village of Mount Prospect faithfully
and with great distinction for 27 years, beginning his career as a member of the Mount
Prospect Police Department April 1, 1985 as a patrol officer; promoted to the rank of
Sergeant on January 4, 1993, promoted to the rank of Commander on August 7, 2001,
promoted to the rank of Deputy Police Chief on March 4, 2003 and finally, to the rank of
Chief of Police on March 20, 2007; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was selected to become Mount Prospect's first Chief
of Police promoted from within the Police Department in over thirty years; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG has exemplified the utmost standards of public
service and stewardship as he led the Police Department in a multitude of diverse programs
and services essential to the safety and quality of life for all citizens of Mount Prospect; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of JOHN K. DAHLBERG, the Police Department grew,
diversified and progressed to meet the expanding needs of the Village of Mount Prospect;
and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was instrumental
in developing and fostering relationships between the Police Department, businesses and
citizen members of the community through the building of collaboration and support; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was influential in
developing and maintaining relationships with other Village departments fostering a high
level of cooperation and understanding amongst departments' staff; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, JOHN K. DAHLBERG initiated a program
of advanced law enforcement education for all supervisory staff providing training in the
latest management concepts and practices used in leadership and government; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, JOHN K. DAHLBERG created the Special
Investigations /Gang Intelligence Unit to address ongoing gang related criminal activity and
coordinate investigations crossing jurisdictional boundaries; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Chief of Police, JOHN K. DAHLBERG created the Traffic
Unit to address specific hazardous traffic law violations in an effort to reduce the number of
traffic crashes occurring within the Village of Mount Prospect and provide education to the
driving public; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG in his capacity as a certified accident
reconstructionist, developed the agency's capacity to technically investigate traffic crashes
and conduct accident reconstructions through the creation of the Major Accident
Investigation Team; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG undertook an extensive revamping and maintenance
of the department's Traffic Enforcement Manual through the 1990's and 2000's. This
continuing project resulted in providing officers with direction in enforcement guidelines
and progressive practices consistent with State law and Village ordinances with the ultimate
goal of ensuring the safety of the driving public; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG provided guidance, leadership and representation in
such multijurisdictional agencies as the Illinois Association of Technical Accident
Investigators, Major Case Assistance Team Task Force, Northern Illinois Police Alarm
System, Northwest Central Dispatch System, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, North
Suburban Chiefs of Police Association, and the Northwest Police Academy; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was the driving force behind the department's patrol
support vehicles, investing countless hours researching equipment and guiding the
department in the purchasing and equipping of these vehicles with state of the art emergency
and communication equipment; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was the recipient of the Cook County Sheriff's
Award of Valor, whereby his quick and appropriate response saved the life of a young
resident intent on harming himself; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG was the recipient of many awards and honors
throughout his career exemplifying a consummate work ethic thus garnering him such
awards as eight unit citations, ten department commendations, four time Officer of the Year
Runner Up — 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989, Officer of the Year for 1990, Franklin M. Kreml
Leadership Award, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety Executive Leadership
Award, and the Christian Life Church Community Hero Award; and
WHEREAS, JOHN K. DAHLBERG will retire from service to the Village of Mount
Prospect on June 5, 2012.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF
TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY,
ILLINOIS:
SECTION ONE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect
do hereby acknowledge the many lasting contributions of JOHN K. DAHLBERG during
his more than 27 years of outstanding service to our Village and its residents.
SECTION TWO: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect
do hereby express their heartfelt appreciation to JOHN K. DAHLBERG and his wife,
Kelly, for their sincere devotion to the Village and do further extend best wishes to them
both for happiness in their future years.
SECTION THREE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount
Prospect do hereby declare Thursday, May 31, 2012 as "John K. Dahlberg Day" in the
Village of Mount Prospect.
SECTION FOUR: That a copy of this Resolution be represented to JOHN K.
DAHLBERG as a permanent record of the recognition, respect and reverence expressed
herein.
SECTION FIVE That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its
passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
