HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/13/2001 SCC minutesMOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION Minutes September 13, 2001 ATTENDANCE: Tokiko Blaine, Carole Bloomquist, Yngve Bloomquist, Evelyn Eichman, John Eichman, Janice Farley, Skip Farley, Lil Floros, Dorothy Kucera, J.L Scott, Adelaide Thulin, Fred Thulin, Irvana Wilks. Guest: Cindy Kiel The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. The Commission observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the events of September 11. Old Business There was no old business to discuss. Guest Report - Cindy Kiel Cindy Kiel, a Mount Prospect resident provided the Commission with a report on her family's experience hosting a S~vres student over the summer. Flavie Bompaire had stayed with her family for several weeks in the summer. Flavie's mother Louise is the Deputy Mayor in S~vres. Flavie attended the 4th of July Parade, visited downtown Chicago and did many exciting things during her stay here. 3. New Business Committee Reports Service - no report Business - no report Government - Communication between Mount Prospect and S~vres continues. Schools - November 7-13 is National French Week. The Village issued a proclamation that will be displayed at the village, the library and the schools. Didier Adon in S~vres reported that they are asking their students to send postcards here with friendly notes and things about France. Churches - Scotty reported that Kirk Reed will discuss the church exchange issue with the Mount Prospect Church Council. The Community Band has cancelled its plans to travel to S~vres. Rotary Exchange Francois Chavatte met with both Rotary Clubs while here on their visit. They are talking about coordinating a youth exchange program. e Parades The Commission discussed participation in Village parades. A budget discussion followed. Lil moved that the Commission should participate in the parades and offered to form a subcommittee. The Commission agreed and there was general consensus. Peace Pole John Eichman reported on his research into Peace Poles. He contacted the Peace Pole company, and learned that the poles are 8 feet tall, red cedar wood, and are 4 or 6 sided. The poles are $160 apiece and would cost an additional $175 to ship to S~vres. Another option would be to order the plexiglass plates and ship them there, and they could get their own pole. It was suggested to get a local business to sponsor the freight. The Commission agreed to approve purchasing one Peace Pole for Mount Prospect and one for S~vres. Ms. Jandris announced that supplemental insurance coverage is available through Sister Cities International for Commission Members traveling to S~vres. The next Commission meeting will be held November 8. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
