HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/13/2000 SCC minutesMOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION Minutes Thursday, January 13, 2000 ATTENDANCE: Tokiko Blaine, Carole Bloomquist, Yngve Bloomquist, Janice Farley, Skip Farley, Leo Floros, Lil Floros, Melanie Karsen, Mike Karsen, Dorothy Kucera, Maura Jandris, J.L. Scott, Paul Sells, Jud Strickland The meeting was celled to order by Dorothy Kucera at 6:02 p.m. Membership Issues Members were asked to review the membership roster and make any necessary corrections. Mayor Fadey announced that couples who were involved in the commission, both individuals would be considered members, and each could vote. It is Village policy that all members of Boards and Commissions receive a free vehicle sticker, but in the case of couples they would only receive 1 sticker per household. Pen Pal Program Melanie Karsen reported on the Pen Pal Program. She was in the process of coordinating programs with Lincoln Jr. High, Prospect H.S. and Hersey H.S. Correspondence with S~vres Mayor Farley reported that he had sent a letter to the Mayor of S~vres to inquire about some severe storms they had recently encountered. Melanie Karsen passed around a New Year's card that the Mayor received from S~vres, and a card she had received from Rolande Sarinelli, a member of the mayor of S~vres' staff. 4. S&vres Delegation Visit Banquet Lil Floros reported that Carole Bloomquist would be handling the banquet the week of the visit. The Banquet will be held Wednesday, May 17, at 6:00 p.m. at Bristol Court. The banquet will be open to the community, and businesses and organizations in Mount Prospect would be invited. A response card would be placed in the next issue of the Village Newsletter, and the information would be posted on the Community Events sign as the date draws nearer. The program was yet to be determined. It was suggested that the various organizations and sen/ice clubs bring their banners to represent them, and decorate the room at the same time. Paul Sells of Busse Flowers reported that they would be doing the centerpieces. A banner could be placed in front of Bristol Court welcoming the S~vres delegation. Lil Floros stated that she thought the decorations should be elaborate. Six people from S~vres will be on the trip. There would be a head table for them. It was suggested that school bands could provide the entertainment. Itinerary for the visit Tuesday, May 16 The delegation is tentatively scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, May 16. It would be difficult to plan this day until we know for sure when they will arrive. There will be a reception at Village Hall preceding the Village Board meeting, then they will be invited to attend the Village Board meeting, and then possibly go out to dinner. Wednesday, May 17 Mount Prospect Day. Paul Sells of Busse Flowers has arranged for a trolley to drive the visitors around on their tour of Mount Prospect. They will visit Village Hall, schools, businesses, etc. Wednesday evening will be the banquet. ister Cities Commission Minutes Page 2 January 13, 2000 Thursday, May 18 The delegation will visit Chicago. The details on this trip ara still being worked out. Friday, May 19 Brunch (possibly at Friendship Conservatory?.), and ceremonial signing of the Sister Cities Agreement at Village Hall. Janice Farley is talking to Marilyn Genther of the Library about having a display at the Library. Lil suggested talking to the Chamber about encouraging the businesses in town to put a display in their windows in honor of the visit. Leo FIoros suggested arranging meetings with the School District Superintendents. Home Stay Assignments Mayor Kosciusko-Morizet and his wife will stay with the Farleys. The Floros' offered to house one couple, and Barbara Persenaire will house one individual. One host was still needed. Arrangements for the other visitors were discussed. Officers Chair- Barbara Persenaire Vice-Chair - Dorothy Kucera Recording Secretary - Maura Jandris French Correspondent - Melanie Karaen Paul Sells - Treasurer New Business/Announcements Leo Flores requested that letterhead be designed for the Sister Cities Commission. Suggested Subcommittees were discussed: 1) Service Clubs 5) Schools 2) Commercial 6) Churches 3) Special Events 7) Seniors 4) Municipal The Mayor suggested meeting at least once a quarter. He also stated that the charter for the Commission should go to the Village Board in March so it is in place by April. Mayor Farley invited the Commission members to the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on January 21. Lil Floros reminded the Commission about Celestial Celebration and said that tickets were still available. The next meeting of the Sister Cities Commission will be February 10, 2000. Dorothy Kucera adjourned the meeting at 7:20 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, MAURA JANDRIS Recording Secretary
