Dorothy Kucera, Mark Miller, Adelaide Thulin, Fred Thulin, Irvana Wilks.
Staff: Maura Jandris
Guest: Rachel Toeppen, Mount Prospect Historical Society
The meeting was called to order at 5:28 p.m.
A new appointee to the Commission, Mark Miller was introduced.
Guest Speaker - Quilting Project
Rachel Toeppen requested time to speak to the Commission. Ms. Toeppen is on the Board of
Directors of the Mount Prospect Historical Society and told the Commission that the Society's
Quilting Cimle would be interested in doing a quilting exchange with S~vres, if they have a
similar group. She suggested it could be coordinated with the Historical Society's Quilt Show.
She said that Palatine had done something similar, hosting a delegation from their Sister City and
having a quilting show while they were here. The quilt the Palatine group made had pictures of
landmarks in the Village, and the quilt from their Sister City had designs. The Mount Prospect
group does not have a design concept for a quilt to exchange yet, they wanted to get the
Commission's approval before they moved forward with the project. Ms. Toeppen did state that
there was a woman in the Mount Prospect group that was an acclaimed quilter/designer who may
be interested in working on the project. The time frame for a visit was late next spring. The
Commission told Ms. Toeppen that staff would contact S~vres and determine if such a club
existed (or any other type of craft or art club) and find a contact person to approach with the idea.
Fred Thulin moved for approval of the project, Tokiko Blaine seconded. The commission voted
unanimously to approve the quilting project idea. The Commission suggested that the quilt design
have a local theme.
Approval of Minutes
Irvana Wilks moved and Carole Bloomquist seconded to approve the minutes of November 8,
2001. The motion passed and the minutes were approved.
Winter Festival Parade Report
Carole Bloomquist reported about the Commission's involvement in the Winter Festival Parade.
The Commission had a table in the refreshment tent and passed out cookies. The table was very
nicely decorated with one of the street pole banners from the S~vres visit last year and a 1ovely
Eifel Tower lamp. The Commission also had a float in the parade, and Tokiko Blaine recognized
for coordinating the float, and for helping to get high school students to ride on the float.
Peace Pole
The Peace Pole had been received in Mount Prospect and in S~vres. Melanie Karsen noticed that
the word peace was misspelled in French. Staff said they would contact the Peace Pole Makers
and ~make arrar~gements to have the sign corrected. The Commission discussed where to plant the
Peace Pole. One suggestion was the park on Pine Street next to Capannari's.
4. Band Trip
Just for clarification, the Community Band Trip to S~wes has definitely been cancelled.
5. Committee Reports
Organizations - Irvana reported that she had sent a letter and survey to community organizations.
She said that she wanted to work out a program/presentation to be able to present at the groups'
meetings and asked Melanie for assistance. Irvana already had a meeting scheduled for April 10
with the Garden Club. It was suggested the same letter be sent to the senior organizations with
Carole Bloomquist's signature.
Business - the idea was raised of the possibility selling porcelain from S~vres here in Mount
Prospect.
Government- The Library had not yet received an answer from the library in S~wes.
It was suggested that something be put in the Village Newsletter about the Commission assisting
in coordinating organization exchanges with S~vres.
Schools - Melanie Karsen has been working on getting the project going. She is working with
Lincoln Jr, High, Far/view, Hersey, Prospect and St. Viator High Schools.
Sister Cities Sign on Entrance Markers
Staff presented a picture of an example of the Sister Cities sign on the entrance markers. The
commission approved, and staff will contact Public Works to have the signs installed on all
entrance markers.
Illinois Sister Cities Convention
Staff distributed information about the Illinois Sister Cities Convention. Dorothy Kucera stated
that she would like to go to the Illinois Sister Cities Convention in Decatur, but would like
someone to go with her. Irvana said that she might be able to attend.
Rachel Toeppen of the Historical Society requested to speak again. She asked when the Commission was
going to get more involved in the Community. She talked about the Des Plaines Sister Cities organization
and how they organize pot luck dinners, show videos and have speakers. She said that they needed to get
regular residents involved, they needed an event. Adelaide Thulin suggested contacting Martha Atherton
of the Des Plaines Sister Cities group. They normally have about 3040 people who attend their quarterly
meetings. Their organization also raises money for scholarships. It was suggested that a group from this
Commission attend an event in Des Plaines to see how it is organized.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
