HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/01/2004 EDC minutes MINUTES ECONONUCDEVELOPMENTCO~rnnS~ON 2nd Floor Conference Room, Village Hall July 1,2004 8:00 a.m. CALL TO ORDER Mr. Cooney called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. In light of the absence of Chairman Norm Kurtz, he asked for the nomination for a chair for the meeting. Bruce Gillilan nominated commissioner Zander for the chair. Support for the nomination was unanimous and Mr. Zander accepted. Commissioners Bruce Gillilan, Margaret Lannen and Tom Zander were present. Commissioners Pat Biedar, Norm Kurtz, David Lindgren and Ben Trapani were absent. Also present were Mayor Skip Farley, Bill Cooney, Mike Jacobs, and Jim Uszler. Special guests were Ed Sitar with Com Ed, Carl Bufalini, enterpriz Cook County, and Brenda Sherwood, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. APPROVAL OF NUNUTES The minutes of the Tuesday, May 11, 2004 meeting were approved unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Status Update Mr. Cooney asked that the new business item, the Com Ed Business Visitation/Retention Program be placed first on the agenda so that our guests could leave after they were complete with their presentation. The commission concurred with this request. Development Update M[, Cooney asked Margaret Lannen to provide an overview of the Randhurst status. Ms. Lannen stated that Costeo would be opening shortly after Labor Day and that commission members could view the construction site by going on the Randhurst.com webpage. She stated that Applebee's was also relocating to a new location facing Costco and Buffalo Wild Wings was hoping to open this fall. She stated that there were several other pending leases that she could not publicly discuss at this time but that things were looking up for the Randhurst Center. Mr. Cooney then provided a general overview of some economic development projects. He stated that the Culver's restaurant development project at the southeast comer of Dempster and Elmhurst was underway. Culver's was hoping to open its doors by August 28. He also stated that there was a large office user interested in the comer parcel of this development He then provided an overview of the northwest comer of 83 and Dempster that includes the Kohl's, Hobby Lobby and Pool-A-Rama facilities. He stated that Harris Bank has been issued a permit for construction of their bank and that Parkway Bank was in for a permit. He also indicated that the Colony Square Shopping Center was undergoing a major renovation to the façade and that this would be ongoing for the next few months. He has had conversations with Dominick's Finer Foods to determine the status of the two Mount Prospect locations. He was informed that Dominick's would not be doing any improvements until their union negotiations were complete but shortly thereafter they expected to do significant improvements to both locations. NEW BUSINESS Com Ed Visitation/Retentlon Pro2ram Mr. Cooney introduced Mr. Sitar, Mr. Bufalini, and Ms. Sherwood to the Commission. He indicated that he had met with these individuals prior to the meeting to discuss Com Ed's program for visitation and retention. He stated that Mr. Sitar would provide a review ofthe program and then open the floor for questions thereafter. Mr. Sitar stated he was the Economic Development Manger in the northern Cook County area. Com Ed purchased a computer program from a local economic development agency that they utilize to survey businesses in the region. He stated that he has worked with several communities in close proximity to Mount Prospect to implement a similar program to what they are discussing today. He pmvided a general overview of Economic Development Commission July 1, 2004 Minutes Page 2 the program which could include ten teams of 2 (two) individuals each that would go out into the community and perform the business visitation surveys. He said that typically these were formed with local business people, politicians and staff, as well as representatives from Com Ed and DCEO. He stated, in discussion with Mr. Cooney, that the preferred method would be to have the ten teams go out on two different mornings to try to survey as many as 60 different businesses in the Kensington Business Park and other industrial properties. He explained that the computer program would analyze these surveys and provide an overview ofthe current business climate in Mount Prospect. He stated that comments would assist in some public relations efforts and any other means that they can help Mount Prospect improve relations with the business community. There was general discussion among the commission members about the value of programs such as and this and there was general concurrence that this was a program that the Commission would support. It was decided that we should pursue this program this fàll after the summer vacation months were over. Mr. Cooney thanked Mr. Sitar for the presentation and indicated that he would be back in contact with him to try and formalize a timeline for the implementation of the program. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT There was no Chainnan' s report. ADJOURc~ENT The Committee agreed to have their next meeting on September 2,2004.
