"DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
OCTOBER 2011
WHEREAS, violence against women and children continues to become a more prevalent
problem in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, the problems of domestic violence affects all citizens of Illinois and are not
confined to any group of people, but cross all economic, gender, racial and societal barriers and
are supported by societal indifference; and
WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual's privacy, dignity, security and
humanity through the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and
economic control and /or abuse; and
WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide - ranging, directly affecting families, children
and society as a whole; and
WHEREAS, at least 109,000 Domestic Violence offenses were reported to Illinois State Police
last year; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence affects one out of four families. The cost to society and
businesses is consequential, resulting in healthcare related costs of $4 billion dollars annually.
U.S. Companies forfeit close to $700 million in lost wages, sick time and lower productivity; and
WHEREAS, local educational information and resources are available by visiting the
w.endallabuse.orq Web site; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special time to bring this issue to the attention of all
residents of the Village of Mount Prospect so they can become better informed and involved in
local programs to end the cycle of violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby
proclaim the month of October 2011 as
"DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our residents to participate with social service
organizations and concerned citizens across the country to raise the public awareness of
domestic violence issues.

PROCLAMATION
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
OCTOBER 9 - 15, 2011
WHEREAS, Mount Prospect is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those
living in and visiting our community; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes
are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, roughly 3,000 people die as a result of home fires and burns, more than
200,000 individuals are seen in the nation's emergency rooms for burn injuries; and
WHEREAS, scalds to children ages five and under, outnumber burns roughly two -to -one;
and
WHEREAS, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, while heating
equipment and smoking are the leading causes of home fire deaths; and
WHEREAS, Mount Prospect residents are responsive to public education measures and
are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and
WHEREAS, residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more
prepared and will be more likely to survive a fire; and
WHEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence
of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and public education;
and
WHEREAS, the 2011 Fire Prevention Week theme; "Protect Your Family From Fire"
effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire
during Fire Prevention Week and year round.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby
proclaim the week of October 9 — 15, 2011 as
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
in the Village, and I call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to remember the
2011 message " Protect Your Family From Fire"
