Minutes: July 21, 2011
Attendees: Paula Randant, Judy Thorne, John Korn, Skip & Janice Farley, Maura Reschke, Rachel
Toeppen, Tricia Fusilero, Paul Seils, Mike Karsen, Lorrie Huber, John Sibrava, Mary Ann Sibrava, Irvana
Wilks, Dorothy Kucera, Gary Randant and Maura El Metennani.
I. The meeting was called to order by Dorothy Kucera at 5:35 PM.
II. The minutes of the previous meeting, May 19, 2011 was approved with corrections.
III. Dorothy Kucera asked for Reports:
a) Irvana Wilks reported on the trip to Sevres. The report was accepted with suggestions.
b) Suggestions: Introductions each day with members and hosts participating in an event
would be helpful. Bio's of Sevres members would have been helpful. The Mount
Prospect delegation provided Bio's to the Sevres delegation. It was noted that they
used them to know people. There was some discussion of gifts and items purchased by
members for the French Market. John Sibrava brought up that more clarification of
budget items might be helpful. This item was moved to have a further discussion not
related to the French visit. Irvana will add financial information to her report.
c) Budget: There was some discussion of our budget as a commission and how it is
managed /distributed so that members would know what funds are available for varying
events, activities and fund raisers. John brought up making a list and Trisha Fusilero
volunteered to make a form that would make it easier for members to report on the
funds spent or collected at an event, activity or fund raiser.
d) Vacant Position; Irvana shared that she and Dorothy had interviewed and offered a
position to Carolyn Dunen but she decided not to accept the position due to time
commitments.
IV. Old Business:
a) 4 th of July Parade, Gary and Paula Randant- Paula provided a report of the process and
reported that 3 people marched. (Paula, Gary and Trisha) See report attached to
minutes. Paula will check on professional signs and what happened to last years signs.
The cost of the cart will also be explored for the purposes of information.
b) French Festival at the Library -Mary Ann Sibrava reporting- There were 66 attendees.
Rose Nadolsky, from the Old Town School of Folk Music performed. Ice cream was
provided by Capannaries. The attendance was low and Mary Ann suggested we look to
move it to a Saturday in July in conjunction with a children's library schedule. Mary Ann
will look to a Saturday date for 2012. A motion was made by Lorrie Huber for the July
14, 2012 date. It was seconded by Rachel Toeppen and the motion was passed. Mary
Ann provided a written report with expenses included.
c) French Market - Maura El Metennani reporting- Maura reported that she has been
making some progress but needs more vendors. Several possible vendors were
suggested and using vendors from other towns was discussed and agreed to so that as
many French related vendors as possible could be accessed. The French Market will be
September 18 from 8 to 1 during the Farmers Market.
d) 2011 Book Crossing Program -Mary Ann Sibrava reporting- Mary Ann provided flyers of
the book crossing listing the 3 levels of books. The 3 levels are 4 th to 6 th graders, 6 th to
12 graders and Adults. Mary Ann provided a written report of the books in the
program. Three of the books one from each level will be discussed and the dates are
listed in the report. The Bastille day Week display at the Library July 8 to July 15 was
also noted. The Innovations in Reading Prize was also mentioned. The Book Crossing
program did not win.
e) "Tea with Napoleon" Denise Rano reporting- Denise was not able to attend the meeting
but provided a report and flyers to the Commission. The event will take place
September 25, 2011 from 2 to 5 pm and includes tea, mimosa's, French Pastries, finger
sandwiches and Napoleon. The budget and cost are included in the report. The event
will be held at Denise's home. The cost is $15. Per person. See report for further
details.
f) Wine tasting -Maura Reschke reporting- The Wine Tasting will be held November 10,
2011 during French Week. It will be held at Vino 100. More details and costs will be
shared next meeting.
g) Sister City of the Year - Dorothy Kucera reporting- Dorothy shared draft copies of the
application to be sent. Dorothy gathered some other suggestions such as awards from
the past to include. She will complete the application and send it in by August 1, 2011.
V. New Business:
a) 2013 Official Visit from Sevres, France delegation to Mount Prospect- Dorothy Kucera-
reporting- Dorothy appointed Paula Randant the Chairperson of the visit. Paula
accepted the appointment and will seek committee members from Commission
members and Mount Prospect residents.
b) John Sibrava brought up that in Sevres at the Official community dinner a resident
involved in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts approached him about possible exchanges. The
individual who spoke to him was Stephan Flamant. John will talk to the Boys Scouts
who have a regional office in Mount Prospect and just share information.
c) Janice Farley read a letter from Benedicte Kosciusko - Morizet, the wife of the Mayor of
Sevres, Francois Kosciusko - Morizet. The letter was heart felt and received well by
Commission Members. A copy will be in the record.
VI. Discussions:
Our website was discussed. It is quite modest and members suggested adding information and
graphics. Paula Randant will look into this. There was additional discussion of fund raising, versus
educational and cultural events particularly in light of the inability of the Village to offer much funding
for the Commission activities. The Commission has expanded it's activities and fund raising and will
need to fund raise for the French Visit in June 2013.
VI. The next meeting will be September 15, 2011 at 5:30 PM at Village Nall.
VII. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM.
