MAYORS REPORT 10/05/2010 PROCLAMATION "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" OCTOBER 3- 9, 2010 WHEREAS, Mount Prospect is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our community; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, roughly 3,000 people die as a result of home fires and burns, more than 200,000 individuals are seen in the nation's emergency rooms for burn injuries; and WHEREAS, scalds to children ages five and under, outnumber burns roughly two -to -one; and WHEREAS, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, while heating equipment and smoking are the leading causes of home fire deaths; and WHEREAS, Mount Prospect residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and WHEREAS, residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will be more likely to survive a fire; and WHEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and public education; and WHEREAS, the 2010 Fire Prevention Week theme; "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With" effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year round. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the week of October 3rd thru 9th as "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" in the Village, and I call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to remember the 2010 message "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With" lrvana K. PROCLAMATION "NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" OCTOBER 2010 WHEREAS October, 2010 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 15 is National Mammography Day; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer site of, and the second deadliest cancer among women; and WHEREAS, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that 207,090 new cases of invasive female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2010 and an estimated 39,840 women will die of the disease; and WHEREAS, African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than women of all other races; and WHEREAS, an estimated 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men this year; and WHEREAS, death rates from breast cancer have been declining, and this change is believed to be the result of earlier detection and improved treatment; and WHEREAS, mammography - an "x -ray" of the breast- is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Irvana K.Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2010 as "NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" and October 15, 2010 as "NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY" in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our residents to participate in this observance and remember "Early Detection Saves Lives." lrvana K.
