COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION
Community Center, Village Hall
The Community Relations Commission (CRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect met Thursday, April 1,
2010, at the Community Connections Center located at 1711 W. Algonquin Road, Mount Prospect,
Illinois.
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Tolbert called the meeting to order at 7:12 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL

Commissioner Ortiz
Commissioner Schmalzer
Absent: Commissioner Muench
Also in Attendance: Michael Semkiu, Deputy Chief of Police
Carlos Huizar, Community Connections Center
Police Liaison
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Commissioner Parikh and seconded by Commissioner Ortiz to approve the
minutes of the February 4, 2010, meeting. The minutes were unanimously approved by a voice vote.
IV. OLD BUSINESS
Discussion of Commission Goals
Commissioner Schmalzer would like to see events promoting the Commission's identity, such as
collecting basic school supplies or equipment for summer daycare sports. Commissioner Parikh
suggested working with the Lions Club to collect supplies for the schools.
Suburban Mosaic Book Program
Chairman Tolbert reported that the Library is continuing to promote the Suburban Mosaic Book Program
and the program is going very well.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Community Connections Center
Carlos Huizar, the Community Connections Center Police Liaison, provided the commission with
information about his current duties and responsibilities at the center, local businesses and area schools.
CSO Huizar and the crime prevention unit are currently coordinating an Open Gym — Soccer "DROP IN"
Program. The Park District will be working with the crime prevention unit to mow the soccer fields on the
park district property in and around the Commonwealth Edison right -of -way. Carlos Huizar plans on
working with local businesses to solicit assistance in purchasing equipment for the soccer program.
Commission members then began a discussion as to how their intent to work with the community may be
channeled to either assisting with soliciting assistance for the soccer program or possibly soliciting for
assistance in finding donations to fund back to school supplies for local youths. Chairman Tolbert asked
the commission to look into possibly assisting Carlos Huizar with either the soccer program or back to
school supplies program. Chairman Tolbert suggested approaching the Rotary Club to assist in

donations, as one of their basic goals is to work with and give back to the community. Chairman Tolbert
also mentioned a Rotary program entitled District Simplified Grant which may be used for either
community program discussed.
Commissioner Parikh continued the discussion on collecting school supplies to assist children and
suggested putting together a list of supplies to be distributed. This program can be administered by and
through the center with the assistance of the commission.
Parade
Chairman Tolbert will be out of town for the 4th of July parade this year and asked if anyone else would
like to participate. Chairman Tolbert explained the procedure for taking part in the parade as a
representative of the commission and indicated it was a rewarding and enjoyable task he has taken part
in for a number of years.
Mr. Parikh suggested a joint meeting with the Interfaith Council which meets on the fourth Tuesday of the
month. A joint meeting might be suitable forum to pool resources and ideas for both groups to address
community issues.
Deputy Chief Semkiu reminded the commissioners of their responsibility to return their Village disclosure
statements to Lisa Angell, the Village Clerk, as soon as possible.
Deputy Chief Semkiu also mentioned the Fair Housing Proclamation to the commissioners. The
proclamation would be issued at the April 6, 2010 Village Board Meeting. Chairman Tolbert indicated he
would attend to accept the proclamation along with Deputy Chief Semkiu, however any of the
commissioners were welcomed to attend in his place.

VII, ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. after a motion was made by Chairman Tolbert and seconded by
Commissioner Parikh. The motion was approved unanimously.
