HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/20/2008 SCC minutes MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 20, 2008 5:30 PM Village Hall Community Center Members Present: Judy Thorne, Rachel Toeppen, Maura Reschke, Paula Randant, Skip Farley, Janice Farley, Mike Karsen, Denise Rano, Mary Ann Sibrava, Lorrie Huber, Irvana Wilks, John Korn, John Sibrava Members Absent: Cindy Kiel, Dorothy Kucera, Gary Randant, Paul Seils, Felicien Sirois Staff Liaison: Maura El Metennani I. The minutes for July, 2008 and September, 2008 were approved as read. It was announced that Paula Randant has agreed to be Recording Secretary for the Sister City Commissions meetings effective immediately. n. Skip Farley reviewed the Treasurer's Report prepared by the Finance Department of the Village. The Report was discussed and a copy is filed with the minutes of the meeting. The Report was accepted. III. Reports and discussions: French Market: Maura E. shared that the market was very successful. There was a lot of positive feed back from visitors to the event. It was a great community out reach. It was reported that Denise Rano donated money from the sale of her handbags. The event was described as fun, a perfect day and the Lions were very supportive ofthe event. Vino 100: Maura R. shared that it was a good event but made less money than previous Wine Tastings. $720.00 was collected at the door. Vino 100 donated 5 % of sales which was $67. For wine and it was rounded up by Vino 100 to $100. Total expenses were $337.87 resulting in a profit of $482.13. It was also a good time with 2 wine distributors donating wine. It was mentioned that there might be an issue with a liquor license for the future and Maura will update us as needed. French Ensemble Visit: Denise R. provided a full written report with all the particulars of the event. It will be attached to the official minutes. Denise reported that the event was a full year in the planning. Several events and the final concert were all filmed by the Mount Prospect TV station. Denise has it on DVD and made CD's ofthe pictures of many of the events over the week. It was reported that the school concerts were great. Thousands of students enjoyed the Puss and Boots program. Irvana thanked the group for all its work in bringing the program to the community and making the week such a success. There was some discussion on future and past visits from Sevres and to Sevres. This spring there will be an official visit from Sevres to Mount Prospect. Rachel asked for the definitioin of an official visit as opposed to a unoffical visit. Denise and Dorothy went all out for the closing dinner. There is some remaining funding for the event and it was suggested that the money be shared with Denise and Dorothy for the expenses they incurred. It will not cover all the expense but might help a little to defray some of the cost of the final party. IV. Shining Star Award Entry: Rachel and Dave completed an entry for the Commission; a copy was circulated for members to review. They spent approximately 40 hours putting it together. It was turned into Tom Zander. The entry was spectacular. They did an amazing job on presenting the Sister Cities commission, its history and activities. V. OfficIal Visit: Judy Thorne and Irvana Wilks reported. Irvana stated that she had made an initial contact to the Mayor of Sevres. It appears the visit will be in the spring and last approximately 4 days with a 1 day trip to Chicago. Discussioin also followed about offering a side trip, as was offered to the Mount dProspect delegation during the last visit to France. lrvana suggested a tour of the O'Hare Airport. They also wanted us to give them a number for the delegation. 12 was suggested as the number to propose for the delegation. Dorothy wrote a letter to the Commission due to her absence with suggested roles for the visit in the spring. A copy of the letter will also be attached to the minutes. It was also suggested that Denise Rano be the contact person for Arzelle in preparations so they can communicate in French which may be more comfortable for them. VI. Winter Festival December 6, 2008: We will provide cookies in the warming tent at the end of the parade from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. Paula and Cindy will be at the cookie table. VII. Family Festival: Mary Ann addressed doing the festival again, July 15,2009 and will book a room at the Library. The group agreed. VllI. The next meeting will be January 15,2009 at 5:30 PM in the Village Hall Community Center. MEETING WAS ADJOUNED AT 7:10PM. Respectfully Submitted, Paula Randant
