PROCLAMA TION
"MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB
CELEBRA TING 75 YEARS OF SERVICE"
WHEREAS, in 1917 a young Chicago insurance agent by the name of Melvin Jones called
upon a number of independent civic organizations to unite in service to mankind; and
WHEREAS, in October, 1933 a group of 20 civic-minded citizens in Mount Prospect decided
to answer Melvin Jones' call by organizing the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB, which
was chartered on March 1, 1934, with Lion A.L. Buck, M.D. as its first President; and
WHEREAS, over the years the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB has contributed greatly
to the development of Mount Prospect including purchasing street signs, building a
toboggan slide, blacktopping of the Village's railroad parking lot, supporting Village
beautification and sponsoring activities like Easter egg hunts and the annual Fourth of July
Village Fair; and
WHEREAS, in 1946, the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB purchased 16 acres of land in
the heart of the Village and a year later donated it to be used as a park, creating the
beautiful Lions Memorial Park, and continued to donate improvements like lighting, a public
address system and a shelter house; and
WHEREAS, for 75 years, the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB has remained committed
to their mission of "service to mankind" by donating immeasurable hours to helping needy
children, assisting the sight-challenged by collecting used eye glasses and funding eye
exams, assisting the hearing impaired, and contributing to camps for the blind and multiple-
challenged; and
WHEREAS, the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB runs the annual Farmers' Market for
five months of Sundays each year, providing the residents of Mount Prospect with the
opportunity to purchase fresh, locally-grown produce; and
WHEREAS, the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB annually supports the college
educations of several local high school seniors through the George Gattas Memorial
Scholarship Fund, named for a deceased member; and
WHEREAS, the MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB now assists the victims of natural
disasters all over the country by collecting money and needed supplies through Lions
Charities, Inc. 's Operation Roar program.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby
proclaim March 1, 2009 as a day of celebration of
"MOUNT PROSPECT LIONS CLUB'S 75 YEARS OF SERVICE"
in the Village of Mount Prospect and I call its significance to the residents of the Village, and
encourage everyone to recognize the great works of this organization.
