Lunar New Year 2026 PROCLAMATION Celebrating the Lunar New Year Februray 17- February 27 2026 WHEREAS, the traditional Lunar New Year celebration, also known as the Spring Festival, dates back as early as the fourteenth century, B.C., and Lunar New Year is celebrated over 15 days, with dates based on the lunisolar calendar. This year, the holiday runs from February 17 through February 27; and WHEREAS, each new year is paired with one of twelve zodiac animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey rooster, dog or pig and 2026 is the powerful year of the Horse; and WHEREAS, the Year of the Horse symbolizes freedom, movement and momentum; it is a symbol of energy, independence and forward motion - a year that rewards courage, action and trusting your instincts: and WHEREAS, the Lunar New Year is celebrated uniquely in many different Asian countries but regardless of the country, culture, religion, or ethnicity, the day is a time for family reunions, gatherings, reaffirming bonds and reflection; and WHEREAS, the Village of Mount Prospect is home to a large and diverse Asian - American community that has contributed significantly to the social and economic vitality of the Village; and WHEREAS, the Village of Mount Prospect believes that celebrating diversity helps create a vibrant community in which all individuals and families feel welcome further embodying the Village's motto: Where Friendliness is a Way of Life. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Paul Wm. Hoefert, do hereby recognize February 17 through February 27th as "LUNAR NEW YEAR" in the Village of Mount Prospect and encourage all members of the community to join me in this special observation by wishing all residents good health and prosperity as we welcome the new Lunar New Year.
