Black History Month Proclamation 2026 Proclamation "Black History Month" February 2026 Whereas, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, and in 1976, it was expanded to the entire month of February so that our nation could honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of Black Americans and to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans to our nation's culture and collective history; and Whereas, this Nation was founded upon and is guided by a set of principles that includes every person has been created equal, that each has their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that each shall be accorded to the fullest protection of the law; and acknowledges the challenges, injustices, and oppression faced by Black citizens and that we must actively work to eliminate these challenges, injustices and oppression; and Whereas, Black History Month is a time to commemorate the incredible cultural, scientific, political, and economic contributions of Black Americans, whose example of heroism, patriotism, and enterprise has given people of all backgrounds confidence, courage, and faith to pursue their dreams; and Whereas, the 2026 Black History Month theme, designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, "A Century of Black History Commemorations," focuses on the transformative impact of commemorating Black life and history, acknowledging its role in shaping American identity and challenging systemic injustices. Now, therefore, I, Paul Wm, Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February 2026 as "Black History Month" I encourage all individuals to engage with our neighbors throughout the year by taking advantage of opportunities to study the history of Black Americans to establish safe spaces where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected.
