The purchases will be spread throughout the year just like in 2025. The 2026 budget allocated a total of $77,,410, based on what the department anticipated purchasing this year, including eight sets of replacement gear for current members and six sets for anticipated new hires. Replacement gear for current members includes a coat, pants, suspenders, and boots (if necessary). Gear for new hires includes these items along with gloves, hoods, helmets, and rental PPE to be used until their gear arrives. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has a standard for structural firefighting gear. NFPA 1851 - Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting states: Structural turnout gear and ensemble elements should be retired no more than 10 years from the manufacturing date. Once the protective properties of the turnout gear have diminished, it is no longer safe to use. The Department currently replaces gear every 7 to 9 years. Replaced gear remains with the firefighter and is designated as backup gear for use when their primary set is being cleaned or repaired. The Department's current turnout gear is the "G-Xtreme 3.0" model by Globe. This gear offers a well-balanced combination of protection, breathability, and maneuverability, while remaining relatively cost-effective. It is a mid -to -high -tier option within Globe's lineup, positioned above two lower -tier options and below one higher -tier option. Previously, the Department used a lower -tier model, but after evaluating the enhanced flexibility and performance of the upgraded gear, the clothing committee determined that the small increase in cost was worth the additional benefits. In 2022, the Department tested two sets of gear from an alternative manufacturer. The materials selected were intentionally chosen to match current turnout gear specifications and get a fair representation. The alternative was equally light and more form -fitting. While the gear was equal in these regards, the slimmer cut was not universally favored by the members. The cost of the comparable gear was approximately 10% higher. The Department's Clothing Committee still feels the Globe gear we currently use is the best option but will continue to monitor advancements across manufacturers to ensure we meet the needs of the department. Air One is the sole -authorized distributor of Globe products in Illinois. The Department is asking the Board to waive the bid process and approve the purchase of Globe turnout gear from Air One for an amount not to exceed $77,410. Discussion N/A Alternatives 1.
