Black History Month Proclamation 2025
Proclamation
"Black History Month"
February 2025
Whereas, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, and in 1976, it
was expanded to the entire month of February so that our nation could honor the
achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of Black Americans and to celebrate the
contributions of Black Americans to our nation's culture and collective history; and
Whereas, this Nation was founded upon and is guided by a set of principles that includes
every person has been created equal, that each has their rights to life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness, and that each shall be accorded to the fullest protection of the law;
and acknowledges the challenges, injustices, and oppression faced by Black citizens and
that we must actively work to eliminate these challenges, injustices and oppression; and
Whereas, Black History Month is a time to commemorate the incredible cultural,
scientific, political, and economic contributions of Black Americans, whose example of
heroism, patriotism, and enterprise have given people of all backgrounds confidence,
courage, and faith to pursue their dreams; and
Whereas, the 2025 Black History Month theme, "African Americans and Labor," focuses
on the significant contributions of Black people to the workforce throughout history,
from slaveryto present-day leadership roles in various industries. It highlights the impact
on the Black experience, encompassing both historical agricultural labor and
contemporary professional achievements.
Now, therefore, I, Paul Wm, Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do
hereby proclaim February 2025 as
"Black History Month"
I encourage all individuals to engage with our neighbors throughout the year by taking
advantage of opportunities to study the history of Black Americans to establish safe
spaces where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected.
Paul Wm. Hoefert, Mayor
