The minutes of May 15 were approved with changes: Felicien was not present, change day to Wednesday (Tuesday listed twice), Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Commission will continue to seek donations, Reta (not Rita), process is exhausting and complicated (not completed), meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m. (not 6:10 p.m.) 4th of July Parade Mike Karsen and Cindy Kiel and her son passed out 1000 flyers. They ran out along the way. The float was very nice, Public Works did a great job. Felicien has photos. Travelogue This issue was tabled. It had been suggested to have a speaker do a travelogue "Journey to France." The cost for the speaker was $220, it was suggested that perhaps Retro Bistro could do refreshments. Dorothy suggested that the Commission limit itself to one cultural activity per year, and they had already sponsored one activity in 2008, the Consul General of France spoke at the Library in the Spring. It was decided that the Commission had too many activities schedule for the remainder of 2008. It was suggested to revisit in 2009, keeping in mind that the library schedules their events well in advance. Sister Cities International It was reported that the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission won the International Arts and Culture award for 2008 for our quilt exchange with Sevres. Thanks to Rachel Toeppen for all of her hard work in applying for the award. The commission received a plaque for this honor. Mayor Wilks was planning to attend a luncheon with the Sew Bee It Quilters who had participated in the exchange. Conservatoire Visit/Play Denise Rano is organizing this project. The planning subcommittee met on June 13. The proposed schedule has been established. Performances of the group are scheduled for the schools. Paula Randant said that Kiwanis was willing to contribute. The community performance ant Forest View Community Education Center is expected to cost $1000. District 214 is willing to cover half of the cost, so Sister Cities will have to pay $500 for the use of the theater. Other expenses would be lunch while they are here. Denise said that District 214 would include an ad in their brochure and they will publicize. John Korn suggested that the Commission ask for donations from the service clubs, and to ask for at least $250. It was decided that the Commission would send letters to the service clubs requesting donations. Bastille Day Concert Judy Thorne is coordinating. Flags and banners will be delivered for set up at 6 p.m. Information will be distributed with the programs along with coupons for the Oberweis fund raiser. The Mayor will read the poem she composed for the visit at Normandy, France. Sister Cities Commission July 10, 2008 Meeting Minutes Page 2 11/14/2008 French Family Festival Mary Ann Sibrava reported on this event to be held at the library July 16. It was publicized in the Library newsletter and calendar. Language Stars and Capannari's will both be involved again this year. 70 people are registered. The event will also be announced at the upcoming concert. So far, activities planned include: passports, stamping, music and movement, hopscotch game and kaleidoscope craft. Girl Scouts and Youth Commission were both possibilities for help. Volunteers are needed. Cindy, Felicien, John Korn, Irvana, Judy and Dorothy all said they would be there or try to be there. Oberweis Fundraiser Judy Thorne reported that the Commission could raise as much as 30% of sales, depending on the total amount of sales. A poster was at the Library, Coupons would be distributed at the Bastille Day Concert. Wine Tasting The date set was Oct. 30 from 6 - 9 pm at Vino 100. The wines will be from the U.S. Admission will be $10 and hors douerves will be served. Materials should say "Net proceeds will go to support Sister Cities activities. French Market Maura EI Metennani discussed the French Market scheduled for Sept. 14. Denise Rano offered to sell her homemade bags and donate the proceeds to Sister Cities. Several issues needed to be determined including vendors, charge from Lions Club, insurance, tents. Volunteers for subcommittee included Felicien, Dorothy, Irvana, Paul and Rachel. Other Business There was discussion regarding shared spousal appointments on the Commission. Irvana will discuss with attorney, Meeting adjourned at 7:12 pm. The minutes of July 10, 2008 were deferred to the next meeting. Donations were announced - thanks to Paula and John Korn, Kiwanis donated $250, Lions $500 for the upcoming visit of the Conservatoire. Sister Cities International Culture Award Rachel reported that Reta Brudd of Illinois Sister Cities attended the convention and accepted our award on our behalf. Bastille Day Concert Judy Thorne reported that the concert went well. It was recorded for MPTV. French Family Festival Mary Ann Sibrava reported that the event was very successful. 115 people attended, all families. Attendees were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the activities. She recommended doing it again. Rachel thought there were more younger children this year, compared to previous years. Language Stars really makes it work. Oberweis Fundraiser Judy Thorne reported that coupons were distributed at the Bastille Day Concert. Oberweis let us pass out coupons at the store which really helped. Judy thanked all who helped by volunteering for the fundraiser. The commission did received the 30% of sales. Another fund raiser suggestion was Community Days at Carsons. French Market The French Market had to be rescheduled due to flooding the day before the event. It was rescheduled for Oct. 12. Plan on rain date for future. Make sure to have at least 2 people staffing table. Awards An application is pending for Illinois Sister City of the Year award. Conservatoire Visit/Play Denise Rano reported that the host families are almost settled. 12 musicians will be coming. Pickup will be Sunday, Oct. 26. Some expenses include lunches and train tickets. Rachel volunteered to help. Mayor Wilks will email Mayor Francois Kosciusko Morizet about a potential visit in 2009. Mayor September is preferred. Meeting adjourned at 6:45 pm. MINUTES VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT COFFEE WITH COUNCIL SATURDA Y, November 8, 2008 9:00 A.M. Village Hall Community Center The meeting convened at 9:00 a.m. Those present were Mayor Irvana Wilks, Trustees Paul Hoefert, Steven Polit and Mike Zade!. Representing the Village were Village Manager Michael Janonis and Human Services Director Nancy Morgan. Carol Tortorello, South Elmhurst Avenue stated she had no issues. Derek Steinweg reported that the Youth Commission distributed surveys and bracelets, which they hope will help with PR for their Commission. Trustee Polit is the new adult advisor appointee. Jim and Pat Chylik received several answers to questions. I) The Randhurst Snow Sculptures moved to Michigan Ave. 2) Hundreds of tickets are issued for street parking after a 2" snow fall. Tickets are also issued for blowing driveway snow in the street. 3) The last day for leaf removal is November 21. After that, leaves can be bagged and will be picked up free until December 15. 4) The only effective way to enforce an ordinance for cell phone usage while driving is with a regional or state law. The Manager said that the Northwest Municipal Conference may work on this. David Schein, NaWaTa Avenue received the answer that there was no maximum height for leaves at the curb and no limit on the number of yard waste parcels. Mr. Schein reported that political signs were stolen by St. Raymond's students. The Mayor and Mr. Schein will meet with the principal to discuss. The Newsletter is not translated in other languages due to the cost, however the Village could review this being done on the web page. Mr. Schein complimented the Police on their call responses. Rodger Kruse, South Louis Street brought in the Sow Thistle from the parkway at Prospect/William. Trustee Hoefert announced that an Eagle Scout will distribute Emergency Kits to senior citizens at 2:00 p.m. today in the Community Room. Mal Holec discussed the Canadian National acquisition of the EJ. & E Rail System. He was informed that the comment period is over and the decision is with the Federal Government. On revenue concerns, the Manager said that Mount Prospect is conservative with the estimates. Trustee Polit encouraged everyone to "Buy Mount Prospect" .
