Motion to approve the purchase of 29 Motorola Mobile Radios
for an amount not to exceed $234,081.91.
September 17, 2024 - REGULAR MEETING OF THE MOUNT
PROSPECT VILLAGE BOARD
CIP
CONSENT AGENDA
Action Item
There is an immediate need to replace the mobile radios (fixed in fire apparatuses), as the
department's mobile radios are over 12 years old and Motorola no longer supports or services
them. Staff would not have the means to fix them if any were to stop functioning properly.
The current mobile radios should be replaced because radio communication is critical in every
aspect of emergency response.
Northwest Central Dispatch (NWCD) will be replacing the Fire Department's portable radios
(carried by staff) in 2025. This item was originally projected to be paid for by each individual
department. As such, the department had originally set aside $750,000 for this purchase and
because NWCD has taken on the cost for each department, a portion of that money can be
used for the purchase of the mobile radios.
Through the competitive bid process, NWCD has identified the Motorola APX 8500 as the
replacement product for the mobile radios that will meet the requirements, be a seamless
installation, and be an easy transition for training. NWCD negotiated a contract with Motorola
that would give departments a 35% discount on the purchase of these mobile radios.
Currently, the department has 24 mobile radios. However, due to limited inventory, some
vehicles have gone without a mobile radio. Staff are asking the Board to purchase 29 mobile
radios, which will aid in the efficiency of new vehicle installations and create a reserve of 1-2
radios for any future vehicles.
The new mobile radios will arrive by the end of the year and will be installed by a Motorola
technician onsite at the fire department.
