Black History Month Proclamation 2024
Proclamation
"Black History Month"
February 2024
Whereas, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History week, expanded in
1976 to the entire month of February, so that our nation has the opportunity to
honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of African-Americans and to
celebrate the contributions of African-Americans to our nation's culture and
collective history; and
Whereas, the history of the Black family in America has been the topic of study in many
disciplines — history, literature, the visual arts and film studies, sociology, anthropology
and social policy; with its representation, identity and diversity reverenced, stereotyped
and vilified from the days of slavery to our own time; and
Whereas, it behooves all members of American society to familiarize themselves with
this history in order to better understand the complexity of the tapestry of the Black
household and its role in modern American social, economic and political life and policy;
and
Whereas, to foster good health and wellness, Black people have embarked on self-
determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and
nursing schools and community clinics that provide spaces for Black people to counter
the economic and health disparities and discrimination that are found at mainstream
institutions; and
Whereas, the 2024 Black History Month theme, "African Americans and the Art"
honors African American artists — poets, writers, visual artists, and dancers who used
their crafts to uplift the race, speak truth to power and inspire a nation.
Now, therefore, I, Paul Wm, Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do
hereby proclaim February 2024 as
"Black History Month"
And I encourage all individuals to engage with our neighbors throughout the year, by
taking advantage of opportunities to study the history of Black Americans' responses to
establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified and respected.
Paul Wm. Hoefert, Mayor
