MAYORS REPORT 10/07/2008 PROCLAMA TION "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" OCTOBER 5-11, 2008 WHEREAS, Mount Prospect is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our community; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has stated that the majority of all home fires 40% start in the kitchen from unattended cooking; and WHEREAS, Mount Prospect's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and WHEREAS, Mount Prospect residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and WHEREAS, residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will be more likely to survive a fire; and WHEREAS, businesses should plan and practice fire and life safety escape plans to better serve their employees; and WHEREAS, the 2008 Fire Prevention Week theme; "Prevent Home Fires" reminds us all of the simple action to work with your family to inspect your home for possible fire hazards; and WHEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department is committed to the safety of life and property from devastating effects of fire; and WHEREAS, the members of the Fire Department are joined by other concerned residents of Mount Prospect, as well as other emergency service providers and safety advocates, businesses, schools, service clubs and organizations in their fire safety efforts. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the week of October 5th - 11 th as "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK" in the Village, and I call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to remember the 2008 message to "Prevent Home Fires" Irvana K. PROCLAMA TION UNA TIONAL BREAST CANCER A WARENESS MONTH" OCTOBER 2008 WHEREAS October, 2008 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 1ih is National Mammography Day; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer site of, and the second deadliest cancer among women; and WHEREAS, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that 178,480 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2008 and an estimated 40,460 will die of the disease; and WHEREAS, African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than women of all other races; and WHEREAS, an estimated 2,030 cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2008 and about 460 men will die of the disease; and WHEREAS, death rates from breast cancer have been declining, and this change is believed to be the result of earlier detection and improved treatment; and WHEREAS, mammography - an "x-ray" of the breast- is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2008 as "NA TlONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" and October 17, 2008 as "NA TlONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DA Y" in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our residents to participate in this observance and remember "Early Detection Saves Lives."
