ROLL CALL Secretary Cindy Rumore called the roll. ~ MOUNT PROSPECT YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES AUGUST 06, 2008 APPROVAL OF MINUTES Daniel Milewski, seconded by Adam Kiel, moved to approve the minutes of the June 04, 2008 Youth Commission meeting with an amendment of corrected spelling of Eric Logisz's name. Motion carried by unanimous approval. GUESTS Mayor Irvana Wilks discussed the downtown and Randhurst redevelopment projects with Youth Commission members. PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Eric Logisz, Daniel Milewski, Alex Oplawski YOUTH COMMISSION SURVEY Co-Chairman Eric Logisz, Daniel Milewski, former Youth Commission member Alyssa Hillman, and Adult Advisor George Clowes conducted Youth Commission survey at the 4th of July Lion's Village Fair. Approximately 20 surveys were collected at the fair. Committee members to consolidate the survey information and discuss the findings at the September meeting. RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE Adam Kiel, Nandini Roy, Derek Steinweg YOUTH COMMISSION ADULT ADVISORS Mayor Wilks advised she will be appointing a new Village Trustee to the Youth Commission due to the recent resignation of Adult Advisor/Trustee Richard Lohrstorfer and a new police liaison due to the retirement of Investigator Kimberley Nagel. OLD BUSINESS FAMILY FRENCH FESTIVAL Daniel Milewski reported Derek Steinweg, Adam Kiel, Nandini Roy, Alex Oplawski, Merrily Ruetsche, and Mayor Wilks attended the second Family French Festival on Wednesday, July 16,2008 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Prospect Library. Youth Commission members assisted the Sister Cities Commission with various activities for the event. MOTION TO ADJOURN Daniel Milewski, seconded by Motion carried by unanimous approval. MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION Community Center, Village Hall Thursday, July 10, 2008 The Community Relations Commission (CRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect met Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Mount Prospect Village Hall located at 50 South Emerson Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois. I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Tolbert called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. II. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Tolbert Commissioner Parikh Commissioner Fuller Absent: Commissioner Ortiz Commissioner Muench Also in Attendance: Michael Semkiu, Deputy Chief of Police III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Parikh and seconded by Commissioner Muench to approve the minutes of the March 6, 2008, meeting. The minutes were unanimously approved by a voice vote. IV. OLD BUSINESS Suburban Mosaic Book Program Chairman Tolbert sits on the committee selecting books for the Suburban Mosaic Book Program. The process for choosing the books was based upon group input to decide what areas to focus on for 2008. Attached is a handout with the list of books selected by the committee. The Mount Prospect Public Library is participating in the program this year, but the schedule has not been established. "Make A Difference Day" Update Apparently, the future of "Make A Difference Day" is unlikely since Baird and Warner Realty, who collected the instruments, is no longer located in Mount Prospect. Forum on Race & Ethnic Diversity The vendor/instructor under consideration for this project has not shown any interest. Chairman Tolbert is researching another idea. Cinco de Mayo Additional information is needed for Cinco de Mayo. V. NEW BUSINESS Interfaith Council Mayor Wilks requested Chairman Tolbert attend the last Interfaith Council Meeting, which was a wrap-up session before summer break. At the meeting, the Interfaith Council Chairman expressed to Chairman Tolbert interest in a joint project with the CRC commission, possibly a dinner. Chairman Tolbert will continue to attend their meetings and report to the commission. Page 1 of 2 Minutes Page 2 July 10, 2008 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) The new Community Development contact is Janet Saewert. The schedule for the 2009 CDBG funding program was submitted and approved. Chairman Tolbert reviewed the grant program process. CDBG presentations are scheduled for the regular meeting of the Community Relations Committee on September 4th and will be held in the Village Board Room. Commission members will receive packets in late August. VI. CORRESPONDENCE No Correspondence. VII. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned after a motion was made by Commissioner Fuller and seconded by Commissioner Parikh. The motion was approved by a unanimous vote. Representing staff was Village Manager Michael Janonis and Finance Director David Erb. Residents in Attendance Andrew & Doug Baar Bill Millar Carol Tortorello Tom and Chris Psihogios David Schein Ken Koeppen Mike Sweeney Maple Street Central Road South Elmhurst Avenue Wille Street Na-Wa-Ta Avenue South Linneman Road Golf Road Mayor Wilks opened the meeting with general remarks and introduced Trustees and staff in attendance. Wilks then moved to the resident portion of the meeting. Andrew and Doug Barr - The Barr brothers were in attendance to earn their "Citizenship in the Community Merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America. Bill Millar - Mr. Millar did not have anything to bring forward. He was in attendance to stay in touch with the current happenings of the Village. Carol Tortorello, South Elmhurst - Ms. Tortorello had follow-up questions regarding an item that appeared on the August 5 Village Board meeting agenda having to do with lot coverage and zoning requirements. Village Board members and staff discussed the options for compliance and what was needed for the next reading set for August 19. Ms. Tortorello also asked about a successor for Joe Mitchell Buick which will be closing its doors for business. Staff shared with the group the reasons for the closing of the business and what options are available on the site. Tom and Chris Psihogios, North Wille - The Psihogios' were in attendance to learn how the Village conducts business. They had questions related to the redevelopment of Randhurst and the timing of the construction. Staff discussed the timing for construction activity. The Psihogios' also asked about the Community Appreciation Day held at Arlington Race track and whether the Village would consider sponsoring such an event. The Mayor stated that at this time the Village was not considering participating in the Community Appreciation Day program. Ken Koeppen, South Linneman - Mr. Koeppen had shared some history related to Linneman Road and the right-of-way that runs up to his property. Mr. Koeppen also mentioned the rough condition of the road and whether there were plans to repair it in the near future. Staff would follow up on the status of Linneman repairs. David Schein, Na-Wa-Ta Avenue - Mr. Schein brought several items to Trustees and staff to discuss. Mr. Schein mentioned the agenda item on lot coverage and zoning requirements from the August 5 Village Board Meeting. This item had been discussed in detail earlier in the meeting. Mr. Schein also brought forward the question of whether a permit was needed to set off fireworks on Mount Prospect Park District properties. Staff would look into the requirements for a permit. Mr. Schein also brought up that a sign noting Neighborhood Watch was unintentionally removed as part of the traffic signage plan for the area surrounding his home. The sign was located in the 500 block of Na-Wa-Ta. Public Works was going to be notified to have this sign replaced. Mike Sweeney, Golf Road - Mr. Sweeney introduced himself to the group and stated that he was running for elected office (Illinois State Senate, 33rd District). He was sitting in on the meeting to take in the issues of the community. Mr. Sweeney did not have anything else to bring forward.
