PROCLAMATION
Gun Violence Awareness Month
June 2023
WHEREAS, gun violence touches every segment of our society and impacts
people of all ages; it increases the probability of death in incidents of domestic
violence; raises the likelihood of fatality by those who intend to injure others; it
places children and young people at increased risk of physical harm and injury;
and disproportionately affects communities of color; and
WHEREAS, gun violence prevention is more important than ever as effects of
the COVID-19 pandemic continue to exacerbate gun violence, after more than
three years of increased gun sales, increased calls to suicide and domestic
violence hotlines, and an increase in gun violence in our cities, towns and
villages; and
WHEREAS, cities across the nation, including Mount Prospect, are working to
end the senseless violence with evidence -based solutions; and
WHEREAS, support for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens
goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from people with dangerous
histories; and
WHEREAS, in the wake of the recent unthinkable gun tragedies, as a
community, must demand action by our lawmakers to stop these senseless acts
of violence; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside time to honor those Americans whose
lives are cut short each year by gun violence, and the countless survivors whose
lives are forever altered.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Paul Wm. Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect,
do hereby proclaim June 2023, to be
National Gun Violence Awareness Month
in the Village of Mount Prospect and I encourage all citizens to support local
efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value
human lives.
Paul Wm. Hoefert
Mayor
