MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION
Minutes
January 17, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairperson Dorothy Kucera.
Mary Ann Sibrava announced that there was a profile about her the Sister Cities program and Sèvres in
the Library newsletter, Preview.
Judy Thorne asked that the following items be added to the agenda:

Convention
Corrections to the minutes of November 17:
Potluck dinner – Denise talked to Scott. The dates of the High School Exchange are April 20 – May 1.
Lorrie Huber was absent.
Judy Thorne moved and Paul Seils seconded the minutes be approved. The motion carried.
Family French Fest at MPPL
Mary Ann Sibrava announced that a date had been set for the Family French Fest at the Library,
Wednesday July 16. It will be similar format as last year. Language Stars has committed to participating
again. It will be advertised of more of a family focus.
Pot Luck Dinner – April 24
Judy Thorne reported on the Potluck Dinner, scheduled for April 24 at 6:30 p.m. Lorrie and Denise talked
to Scott. They are hoping to get 2-3 students to speak. There are plans to have a sing-a-long again. A
slideshow loop will be played with slides from Sèvres. The room has been reserved.
French Consul General event at Library
Felicien Sirois reported on the preparations for “An evening with the French Consul General” at the
Library on March 4. It would be a lecture, he will work on promoting the event along with the library. They
will accept donations. They will have a display, handouts and newsletters. Dorothy asked Denise to let
French students know. It was asked if an invitation would be mailed. It was decided not. Lorrie asked if
District 214 Continuing Education students might be a good audience.

The Consul General will attend the Village Board meeting prior to the lecture at the library, and a
proclamation will be presented to him at that time. The lecture will be filmed for MPTV as part of the
Library Life program.
Community Band Concert – July 14
Judy reported on the Band Concert scheduled for July 14 at 7:30 at Lions Park at the band shell. It will
have a French Theme.
Winter Parade
The parade was cancelled. Cindy returned the cookies.
Girl Scout Exchange
Cindy emailed the Girl Scout contact in Sèvres with the Mount Prospect Girl Scout leader’s information. In
Sèvres, the group is co-ed.
Middle School Exchange
Maura Reschke is waiting for a response.
Musical Exchange
Judy has been in touch with Christopher Beckett. The question of funding was raised. Discussion
followed that it didn’t have to be as intensive as other visits (in terms of tours, entertainment, etc.). The
group could do things on their own. A small dinner or event could be held in their honor.
The group consists of 10 adults. Dorothy asked Denise to develop a written proposal with a
recommendation. Cindy offered to talk to her school about having a performance there. Churches are
also a possibility. Other possible locations for performance: Metropolis Ballroom, St. Pat’s, Athaneum.
Should determine what audience size they had in mind.
Wheelchairs for Peace
Rachel Toeppen reported that the Wheelchairs for peace group is no longer matching funds, and the
wheelchairs now cost $150. She has been trying to contact the organization in California and will check
on final amount. It was determined that a check will be issued to Wheelchairs for Peace in the amount of
$1,050. Should send out press release about donation.
Rachel asked if Wheelchairs for Peace will be an ongoing project? How and when the group should
fundraise for them. It was decided to put this topic on the agenda for the last meeting.
There was a discussion about the budget and accounting reports. The Village Manager or Finance
Director will be invited to attend the next meeting to discuss this subject.
Publicity
Rachel will handle publicity for Commission – submitting articles in State Newsletter and to local
newspapers.
Other Business
Mayor Wilks announced that the Veterans’ asked her to read the poem she wrote for the trip to Normandy
on the occasion of Memorial Day.
Sister Cities State Convention
The dates for the convention are April 18, 19 and 20.
Cindy Kiel said that she was unable to attend the March 20 meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
