Woodson initiated Negro History week, expanded in 1976 to the entire month of February, so that our nation has the opportunity to honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of African-Americans and to celebrate the contributions of African-Americans to our nation's culture and collective history; and Whereas, the history of the Black family in America has been the topic of study in many disciplines — history, literature, the visual arts and film studies, sociology, anthropology and social policy; with its representation, identity and diversity reverenced, stereotyped and vilified from the days of slavery to our own time; and Whereas, it behooves all members of American society to familiarize themselves with this history in order to better understand the complexity of the tapestry of the Black household and its role in modern American social, economic and political life and policy; and Whereas, this year's Black History Month theme "Black Resistance" explores how African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression and how these efforts advocate for a dignified self -determined life in a just democratic society in the United States; and Whereas, to foster good health and wellness, Black people have embarked on self- determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and nursing schools and community clinics that provide spaces for Black people to counter the economic and health disparities and discrimination that are found at mainstream institutions; and Whereas, the growth of Public and Community Health and Health Informatics have led to a rise in preventative care and a focus on body positivity, physical exercise, nutrition, and gardening. Now, therefore, I, Paul Wm, Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February 2023 as "Black History Month" And I encourage all individuals to engage with our neighbors throughout the year, by taking advantage of opportunities to study the history of Black Americans' responses to establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified and respected. Paul Wm. Hoefert Mayor 2 ATTEST: Karen M. Agoranos Village Clerk Dated this 7" day of February, 2023
