PROCLAMATION
Gun Violence Awareness Month
June 2022
WHEREAS, every day, more than 110 Americans are killed by gun violence,
alongside more than 200 who are shot and wounded; and Americans are 26
times more likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income
countries; and
WHEREAS, Illinois has an average of 1505 gun deaths every year, with a rate of
11.9 deaths per 100,000 people; and
WHEREAS, cities across the nation, including Mount Prospect, are working to
end the senseless violence with evidence -based solutions; and
WHEREAS, support for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens
goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from people with dangerous
histories; and
WHEREAS, gun violence prevention is more important than ever as effects of
the COVID-19 pandemic continue to exacerbate gun violence,
after more than two years of increased gun sales, increased calls to suicide and
domestic violence hotlines, and an increase in gun violence in our cities, towns
and villages; and
WHEREAS, in the wake of the recent unthinkable gun tragedies in Uvalde and
Buffalo, we, as a community, must demand action by our lawmakers to stop
these senseless acts of violence.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Paul Wm. Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect,
do hereby proclaim June 2022, to be
National Gun Violence Awareness Month
in the Village of Mount Prospect and I encourage all citizens to support local
efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value
human lives.
Paul Wm. Hoefert
