HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/01/2007 CRC minutes MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION Community Center, Village Hall Thursday, November 1, 2007 m auXJ ~ rr The Community Relations Commission (CRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect met Thursday, November 1,2007, at Mount Prospect Village Hall located at 50 South Emerson Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Tolbert called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. II. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Tolbert Vice Chairman Parikh Commissioner Ortiz Commissioner Muench Absent: Commissioner Fuller Also in Attendance: Michael Semkiu, Deputy Chief of Police \II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Parikh and seconded by Commissioner Muench to approve the minutes of the September 6, 2007, meeting. The minutes were unanimously approved by a voice vote. IV. OLD BUSINESS Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) There was a discussion regarding the Village Board's approval of the Commission's grant recommendation. Suburban Mosaic Book Program Chairman Tolbert discussed a letter the Commission received from Mr. Brennan regarding new themes and books. The Chairman asked the Board to consider theme recommendations since he will be attending the Suburban Mosaic's next meeting on January 16, 2008. Theme suggestions will be placed on the January 2008 agenda. "Make a Difference Day" Update Joanne Fulkerson from Baird & Warner called Chairman Tolbert advising him they received five (5) instruments on the last day scheduled for drop off donations. The instruments were brought to John Jay School. Ms. Fulkerson suggested they schedule the next collection in two years. Forum on Race & Ethnic Diversity Chairman Tolbert asked the Commissioners if they were interested in attending Community Relations Commission (CRC) meetings in other communities. In the past, Lisa Angel surveyed other communities to determine which communities had a Community Relations Commission. Mr. Parikh talked about the history of the Board. Ms. Muench mentioned how racism is multi-faceted. Ms. Muench knows of an instructor who holds workshops and recommended the instructor meet with the Commission to discuss the possibility of putting on a workshop. Mr. Parikh would like to see village leaders and the community involved. Ms. Muench would like to see if an event could be held to draw people out. NEW BUSINESS Resource Center Grant Process Deputy Chief Semkiu discussed the Resource Center Grant process with the Commission. Mr. Parikh mentioned getting the high school students involved as role models. Ms. Ortiz agreed with the importance of involvement and the importance of role models speaking the same language as the youths they are interacting with. ~. CORRESPONDENCE No Correspondence. VII. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned after a motion was made by Chairman Tolbert and seconded by Commissioner Muench. The motion was approved by a unanimous vote.
