Proclamation
Supporting the People of Ukraine
WHEREAS, the people of Ukraine gained their independence from Soviet Russia in 1991, have built a
democratic and pluralistic society, which allows for freedom of religion, speech and fosters the growth
of their rich culture allowing them to take their rightful place on the world stage; and
WHEREAS, on February 23, 2022, Russian forces, under the direction of Vladimir Putin, launched an
invasion of Ukraine the likes of which we have not seen since World War II, killing thousands and
creating a crisis on a global scale, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee, and blatantly
violating international law; and
WHEREAS, the United States has condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack, and reassured
that it supports all actions taken by the Ukrainian military and all those involved in defending Ukraine;
and
WHEREAS, The Village of Mount Prospect is home to many Ukrainian Americans who bring with them
their identity, rich culture and strengthen our diverse community, and many have come to Mount
Prospect as immigrants and been welcomed with open arms to our Village and have added to our
economy, public service and helped our community flourish into the wonderful Village it is today.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Paul Wm. Hoefert, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby stand in
solidarity with our Ukrainian community and encourage all residents of Mount Prospect to join together
for a
Day of Prayer for Ukraine on Sunday, March 20, 2022
to show solidarity in their fight against Russian forces and to restore peace, justice and civility in their
country. And each evening, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Central Standard Time, as
Ukrainian people are awakened by the sound of airstrikes and shelling, I ask each member of our
community to spend a moment in quiet solitude and pray for a peaceful night of rest for people of
Ukraine.
Paul Wm. Hoefert
Mayor
