TO: Village Manager T. L. Burghard
FROM: Assistant Village Manager
SUBJECT: Coffee With Council Items Raised 11-4-78
DATE: November 16, 1978
1. Self & Son Furniture_ Store: Following investigation and subsequent
court action initiated by the Village, a disabled semi -trailer
was removed from the rear of this store. The building put up
by the store owner in place of the trailer meets all of Mt.
Prospect's building codes and the design was approved by the
Building Department before a permit was issued for construction.
1.. Abandoned Gas Station, Cor. William & Northwest Hi hway: A
large barrel filled with water and some oil residue was removed
from behind a concrete barrier wall as requested by residents.
Public Works will continue to maintain the parkway along Rte. 14.
3. Housing Code: See Village Manager's memo of 11-14-78 to Mayor
Krause, and 11-10-78 to Tom Murphy.
4. Sidewalk Along Main St. South of Railroad Tracks: The sidewalks
going across the railroad tracks have deteriorated in much the
same manner as the street crossings have. An update to the
letter sent to the Chicago Northwestern previously should include
this problem and a request for repairs. The ,only other sidewalk
problems in this area are in front of the stores. Store owners
will be contacted regarding any squares which may -require re-
placement. This type of work may be eligible for the 50/50
sidewalk replacement program.
5. Mrs. C. H. Carlson, 602 S. Elm Street: A tree was knocked down
in the parkway near her home. Mrs. Carlson was contacted by
Public Works previous to her visit to the Coffee. The tree
which was destroyed 'is due to be replaced once court action is
finalized. Please see attached explanation from Public Works.
6. Joe Turley, 1747 Crystal Lane: Mr. Turley requested action on
the part of the Village in forcing shopping center owners to
keep their places of business clean. The Health Department and
Fire Prevention Bureau visited the shopping centers at Golf &
Busse, and at Busse & Dempster, and Algonquin & Dempster. All
three shopping centers were asked to clean their premises.
As of this date all three have complied with the Village's request.
The problem is a persistent one though and may be expected to
repeat itself in the future.

Mr. Turley also requested that some action be taken by the
Village to prohibit the parking of heavy trucks in gasoline
stations. Most gasoline stations in the Village have now been
zoned B-4. Under this zoning accessory uses are permitted thus
allowing storage of vehicles that are being worked on. The
storage of trucks and/or buses is specifically prohibited under
this or any lesser zoning classification. The Legal Department
has normally followed the procedure of asking the citizen who
is concerned to initiate the complaint so that court action is
begun. Your direction in proceeding with this matter is requested.
7. Senior Citizens Parking Lot: Mr. Cy Thomas spoke on behalf of
the Senior Citizens Advisory Council to request that the Village
consider placing bumpers or some other lane marking device
in the Center lot to aid them in parking. Public Works Director
Weeks was consulted regarding this request and it is his request
that no change be made in the lot. Concrete bumpers would be
covered with snow the same as the yellow lines are presently
and the bumpers would impede the snow removal, according to
Mr. Weeks.
8. Glenn Fara her, 110 N. Elm Street: Mr. Garagher requested that
a review of the sidewalks be conducted to locate deteriorating
squares in his area. The Engineering Department has completed
a review and will contact Mr. Faragher concerning the results
and how he might participate in the 50/50 sidewalk replacement
program.
9. Central Villa e Area - Speedier in Allevwwaa The Police
Department and Engineering Department.will review the situation
and report back their findings.
10. Mrs. Irene Jangkowski, 603 Crestwood:, The Engineering Department
has had a problem contacting Mrs. Jangkowski by telephone;
therefore, a letter has been sent. (See attached). Because
of the oncoming freezing weather, Mrs. Jangkowski was asked to
wait until next spring before any repairs are made to her parkway.
The pictures taken by Mrs. Jangkowski indicate the Donahue &
Associates were parked in the parkway area that was damaged while
performing part of the Village's Sewer Evaluation Program.
