COMMITTEE REPORTS

Firefighter Ronald Olsen had submitted a request for Disability
Pension to Deputy Chief Ulreich, dated June 30, 1987, who
instructed Randy to have Ron obtain a medical examination report

from two doctors, Dr. Orr and Dr. Magee, with the third medical
opinion to be accepted from Dr. Shea, Ron's doctor. At the time
of this meeting Dr. Magee was the only physicians' report
received. Dr. Orr and Dr. Magee have, on previous occasions,
been requested by the Pension Fund Board to given medical
opinions.
It was noted that Ron Olsen is requesting this disability pension
based on a duty -incurred injury involving a back injury. A brief
medical history was given. Reports and a brief verbal
presentation were given stating that the original injury to Ron's
back was in 1982. in 1984 Ron injured his 'back while skiing.
More recently, the report indicates that Ron suffered an injury
during the course of his duty as a firefighter.
Chief Cavello stated that the recent injury is a new injury and
nothing to do with the skiing injury.
There was discussion by several members of the Board on the
method used to process this application. It was noted that there
is a Medical Committee, consisting of Ron Olsen, Don Barra and
Randy Werderitch and it was the feeling of several members of the
Board that a Special Meeting of the Pension Board should have
been called at which time the Medical Committee should have been
assigned the task of processing this request under the By -Laws
established by the Board, rather than Deputy Chief Ulreich
directing one specific member of the Medical Committee to
handle the matter.
Additional discussion took place on previous injuries suffered by
Ron, in particular those effecting Ron Olsen's ability to perform
the duties of a firefighter; whether this was an injury resulting
from firefighting or recreational activities such as skiing; and,
whether Ron could be assigned to a position in Code Enforcement.
It was noted that the subject of re -assigning a Firefighter to
Code Enforcement is an administrative decision and not something
that is within the jurisdiction of this Board
The Chief was questioned as to whether such an offer to transfer
had been made to Ron and the Chief stated that it had been
discussed by no offer was made.
Ron Olsen stated that he had asked his attorney whether he would
be required to accept a transfer to the Code Enforcement

Department and he stated that his attorney told him he did not
have to accept.
Inasmuch as the medical opinions from all three physicians had
not been received, the request for disability pension for Ron
Olsen was continued until such time as the Board could review all
three medical reports.

Chief stated that he has since found out that the areas the
Department and Pension Board would be interested in pursuing were
not available from this Clinic.
NEW BUSINESS
