IV. OLD BUSINESS
Grant Applications
There was a discussion of the letter sent to John Coleman by
Karen Giet suggesting that the Chamber produce more than one
program under the grant provision. It was suggested by several
members that re -useable assets bought with the grant funds be
made available to other groups applying for funds for identical
properities. Michaele stated that rather than make this suggestion
a ,part of the Grant, each case should be discussed as it comes
before the Commission. George Frazier and John Coleman were in
agreement. Karen noted she would qualify this idea with Assistant
Village Manager, Mike Janonis.
Brouchure
The brochure is still not ready. John Coleman will provide typed
copy, art work, and paper selection to Karen Giet. Ms'. Giet
will contact the Village Clerk to have it printed.
Telethon
The special meeting was called to discuss the viability of the
Jeff Slowik Telethon. It was determined that it was still
viable but that the date should be moved to January 15th. Michaele
Skrown suggested February may be a better time because of the
Christmas season. The Commission was in agreement to moving the
date back.
Karen Giet suggested a 30 minute documentary combined with
community donationproject such as bake sales, spaghetti
dinners, and _pancake breakfasts if Telethon was no longer
practical. John Coleman felt he'd; rather stay with the Telethon
idea but worried that it may become an exercise in television
production if there is no publicity.
John Coleman noted he has had trouble reaching Carole Kleinberg;
at Cablenet concerning video inserts.
Edie Eirich suggested asking the Mayor for a Jeff`Slowik Day
Proclamation.
She also suggested contacting the social worker at Seattle's
Fred Hutchinson' Research Center to speak` with Mrs. Slowick about
publicity as she is generally not in favor of publicity. Ms.
Eirich noted that she has 'received contributions from 25 donors
(Lions, Mount Prospect/ Prospect Heights, Elks, Des Plaines were
examples). She also 'noted the 'effort of Mickey Rosenberg walking
house to house with a raffle donation project. $4,700 has been
collected so far with $26,500 collected (and spent) previously.-
Most of the money is for living expenses not covered by, insurance.
People Magazine has contacted the family ; to do a feature as Jeff "
is the only living double bone marrow transplant recipient. The
cost of the last transplant was $230.000.
John Coleman will write a letter to Mount Prospect Chamber of
Commerce to get them'to participate. in the Telethon. Karen
Giet will have it typed and sent to Dolores Hough .who has agreed
to mail it to her members. John Coleman will meet with Ms. Giet
November 6 concerning this.
Mary Wajer suggested getting Hersey High, School more involved
with the Telethon.
John Coleman will call Mrs. Stovick to get her approval to use
publicity, the Commission' felt there may be very little, if any,
monetary success from the Telethon.without publicity.`
