PROCLAMA TION
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
OCTOBER 9 -15, 2005
WHEREAS,fire kills 3,500 to 4,000 people in the United States each year and 80 to 85%
of all fire deaths occur in the home; and
WHEREAS, roughly 70% of home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms
or without working smoke alarms; and
WHEREAS, 50% of the home candle fires occurred when some form of combustible
material was left or came too close to the candle; and
WHEREAS, most home fire deaths and injuries can be prevented through early warning
and quick responses; and
WHEREAS, smoke alarms have been proven an effective life-saver, having helped to cut
the home fire death rate by one half since their introduction to the general public; and
WHEREAS, working smoke alarms are essential in every household and should be
installed on every level of a home, including the basement and outside of each sleeping
area; and
WHEREAS, developing a home fire escape plan, and practicing it at least twice a year, are
critical to escaping a real fire safely; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Prevention Week 2005 theme; "Use Candles with Care" is an
important message for all Illinois citizens;
WHEREAS, the Mount Prospect Fire Department is committed to the safety of life and
property from devastating effects offire; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Fire Department are joined by other concerned citizens of
Mount Prospect, as well as other emergency service providers and safety advocates,
businesses, schools, service clubs and organizations in their fire saftty efforts.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do
hereby proclaim the week of October 9 - 15 as
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
in the Village, and 1 call upon the people of the Village of Mount Prospect to remember the 2005
message to test your smoke alarms and use candles with care.

PROCLAMATION
"NATIONAL BREAST CANCER A WARENESS MONTH"
October, 2005
WHEREAS, October, 2005 begins the 21s1 year for the observance of National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, since the program began in 1985, mammography use has doubled
for women age 50 and older, and breast cancer deaths have declined; and
WHEREAS, within the United States, one out of every seven women will develop
breast cancer in her lifetime so the mantra "Early Detection Saves Lives, " is so very
important to both men and women; and
WHEREAS, mammography screening is the single most effective method of detecting
breast changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or
felt; and
WHEREAS, with early detection of breast cancer, it is less likely a woman will need
highly invasive treatments, and the more likely she will survive the disease; and
WHEREAS, today there are more than two million breast cancer survivors in the
United States, due in part to early detection.
NOW, THEREFORE, L Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do
hereby proclaim the month of October, 2005 as
"NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"
in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our citizens to participate in this
observance and remember "Early Detection Saves Lives. "
