HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/04/2005 CRC minutes MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION Community Center, Village Hall Thursday, August 4, 2005 7:00 p.m. The Community Relations Commission (CRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect met Thursday, August 4, 2005 in the Village Hall of the Mount Prospect, Illinois, 50 South Emerson Street. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Tolbert called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. Chairperson Tolbert introduced Ms. Ruby Fuller to the commission and stated that she has been interviewing for a position on the CRC. The commission welcomed Ms. Fuller to the meeting. ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Tolbert Commissioner Parikh Commissioner Muench Absent: None Also in attendance: Bill Steiner, Lions Club Fred Steinmiller, Lions Club Joanne Fulkerson, Baird & Warner Michael Semkiu, Deputy Chief of Police Clare Sloan, Neighborhood Planner APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Parikh made a correction to the July 7, 2005 minutes: Page 4 of the minutes should be changed to recognize all former CRC commissioners for their exceptional work. Also, he asked that under the "Adjournment" section, the next meeting read August 4, 2005 instead of July 7, 2005. Chairperson Tolbert asked to correct Page 2, "He will also take it to the next meeting of the Sunrise Rotary Notary Club of which he is 3 member." Chairperson Tolbert stated that he was not a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club. The July 7 minutes were unanimously approved with changes. OLD BUSINESS Ms. Fulkerson updated the commiSSion that they have not received any instrument donations. The Lions Club has received one guitar and advertised at the Sunday Farmer's Market. Initially, the project was to be completed by the time school started in the fall. Flyers have been distributed at the Farmer's Market and at the Downtown Block Party. The consensus at the meeting was to increase their marketing efforts. They discussed having a drop-off box at the market, giving tax-deductible receipts and having an article in the Tribune. Mr. Steinmiller stated that information regarding the project is available on the website www.lionsfarmersmarket.com. The commission discussed the possibility of having a picture with instruments in the local newspaper to gain support for the project. The project will be discussed at the next regular meeting. In the meantime, flyers will be copied and distributed to the public and efforts will be coordinated with the local newspaper. NEW BUSINESS The Commission was presented with preliminary funding recommendations for the 2006 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Chairperson Tolbert explained that the CRC was responsible for funding recommendations regarding the public services. The estimated amount allocated to public services is $74,000. He stated that this meeting was the first of three: August 24 for presentations from the public agencies and September 1 for recommendations to the Village Board. Ms. Sloan explained that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has guidelines for public services. In addition, a memo was distributed stating additional criteria for the commission to ensure that the agencies are meeting the needs of Mount Prospect. She summarized the requests and asked that the commission examine the applications for funding in greater detail. The commissioners stated that they would review the material and listen to the presentations on August 24. The next regular meeting on September 1 would be the final recommendation to the Village Board. Commissioner Muench stated that she would be unable to attend the August 24 Special Meeting. REPORTS rCommission/Staffl The commission did not have a report regarding the Suburban Mosaic Book of the Year. The commission discussed the requirements for a quorum. The commission was unsure if the requirement stated that three commissioners needed to be present the meeting on August 24 or if two would suffice. ADJOURNMENT The next meeting is scheduled for August 24, 2005 as a public hearing to listen to requests from public agencies regarding 2006 CDBG funding.
