MINUTES
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
Community Development Conference Room, Village Hall
Thursday, August 22, 2019
8:00 a.m.
The meeting of the Economic Development Commission (EDC) of the Village of Mount Prospect was
held on Thursday, August 22 in the third floor Executive Conference Room in the Village Hall, 50 South
Emerson Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois.
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. Commissioners Jim Drew, John Healy, David Roe and
Tom Zander were present. Also present were Mayor Arlene Juracek, Bill Cooney, Director of Community
Development, Consuelo Arguilles, Deputy Director of Community Development, and Connor Harmon,
Development Planner. The commission voted unanimously to elect Jim Drew as the Vice-Chair of the
commission.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the February 28, 2019 meeting were reviewed and approved unanimously.
CITIZENS TO BE HEARD
No comments.
OLD BUSINESS
Development Update
Mr. Cooney provided a brief update on various developments throughout the Village. The group
discussed details of the upcoming Planning and Zoning Commission cases and provided insight on
market conditions related to those projects.
The Commission discussed at length the Maple Street Lofts and 10 N. Main projects in the downtown
district. They voiced their support for both projects as they view them as key projects to support
downtown businesses and further overall downtown development.
NEW BUSINESS
Interactive Restaurant Guide
Mr. Cooney stated that staff worked with the GIS division to create an interactive restaurant guide that is
now on the Village website. Mr. Cooney pulled up the webpage and reviewed it with commission.
Commission members generally were supportive of the effort and provided feedback on the design and
appearance of the site. Mayor Juracek added that she referenced the site in a recent welcoming letter
to out of town guests attending a hockey tournament at the Mount Prospect Ice Arena.
Annual EDC Breakfast
Mr. Cooney reminded the commission that the annual EDC breakfast would be held on October 24th He
inquired if the commission wanted to follow the same format has the last few years and the consensus
was that we should. They suggested possibly providing the award winners with tables to display their
advertising on.
Recreational Marijuana
Mr. Cooney advised the commission that the Village Board would be holding a discussion on recreational
marijuana at their September 24th Committee of the Whole meeting and invited the commission members
to attend the meeting if they wished. There was general discussion of the status of what other towns were
doing in the area and the pros and cons of allowing the sale in town.
Police Headquarters/Fire Station #13— Request for Proposals for redevelopment
Staff informed the commission that the police and fire department moves from the downtown remain on
target for April of 2020. Mr. Cooney stated that staff was working on a Request for Proposals for the
redevelopment of the current property at 112 E. NW Highway. He expected to release the RFP in early
September with a response deadline of mid-October.
Business Visitation Program
Mr. Cooney stated that staff had completed eight business visits so far in 2019 with limited participation
by the commission members. He asked if the commission had any recommended tweaks to how we
schedule the visits so that they were more convenient for the commission. The commission discussed
various options but determined that the current process was fine.
OTHER BUSINESS
There was no other business to discuss.
