"Monarch Butterfly Day
May 18,, 2019
WHEREAS,, the monarch butterfly is an iconic Northern American species whose multigenerational migration and
metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly has captured the imagination of millions of Americans; and
WHEREAS,, twenty years ago, more than one billion Eastern monarch butterflies migrated to Mexico,, in the winter of
2014 only 60 million made the trip; and
WHEREAS,, the North American monarch population has declined by more than 90 percent in the past two decades.
Monarch scientists attribute the decline to degradation and loss of summer breeding habitat in the U. S.,, and loss of
winter habitat in Mexico. Western populations of monarch butterflies that overwinter in California are also in decline;
and
WHEREAS,, the Garden Club of Mount Prospect and the Village Public Works Department have partnered to
implement programs and strategies to encourage monarch butterfly habitat in Mount Prospect and will be sponsoring
a monarch and milkweed information table at the annual Public Works Open House on May 18; and
WHEREAS, every citizen of the Village of Mount Prospect can make a difference for the monarch by planting nativt
milkweed and nectar plants to provide habitat for the monarch and pollinators in locations where people live., work.,
learn, play and worship; and
WHEREAS., the Village of Mount Prospect is actively participating in., and promoting the establishment of Monarch
Waystations, and encourages all residents of the community to do so, and the Village recognizes the Mount Prospect
Monarchs Facebook group., a 2019 Shining Star recipient, for their educational and outreach efforts on Monarch
butterflies; and
WHEREAS,, on behalf of the residents of Mount Prospect who have already joined me in creating healthy habitat for
these magnificent butterflies, I am honored to support and be a part of the National Wildlife Federation"s Mayor's
Monarch Pledge; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I,, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim May 18, 2019
as

WHEREAS, the monarch butterfly is an iconic Northern American species whose
