PROCLAMATION
ACKNOWLEDGING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF
IRVANA K. WILKS
TO THE MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS has demonstrated service to the Village of Mount
Prospect with dedication and grace for 33 years beginning in 1985 as an appointed
member of the Mount Prospect Downtown District Development and Redevelopment
Committee, her successful election as Village trustee in 1991, 1995, 1999 and
2003, and her two -term tenure as Mayor 2005-2013; and
WHEREAS, she graciously accepted appointment to the Mount Prospect Sister
Cities Commission upon her retirement as mayor, continuing her service to the
Commission that was begun in the year 2000, as one of the founding members of
the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission; and
WHEREAS, during the tenure of IRVANA K. WILKS, the Sister Cities relationship
with Sevres, France has remained vibrant with numerous ongoing civic and cultural
exchanges; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS eloquently represented the Village of Mount Prospect
at the American Cemetery in Normandy, France, when she led the Sister Cities
delegation in a solemn wreath -laying ceremony during which she shared her literary
prose and poetic mind through her poignant and beautiful poem titled "Hallowed
Ground", and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILK'S unwavering commitment to promote diversity,
public service and unity amongst all citizens, provided the groundwork for the
Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission's recognition as the Illinois Sister Cities of
the Year in 2011; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS served the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission
with care and compassion and guided by dearly departed commission member
RACHEL TOEPPEN, provided a wheelchair to a child in need through a partnership
with the Wheelchair Foundation; and
WHEREAS, through her devotion and responsiveness to the citizenry, and her
dedication, leadership and intense love for this community, the Mount Prospect
Sister Cities Commission is stronger today because of IRVANA K. WILKS; and
WHEREAS, IRVANA K. WILKS retired from public service in 2018, but her
eloquence and grace will live on through the Sister Cities Commission for many,
many years to come.
NOW THEREFORE, I Mayor Arlene A. Juracek along with the Mount Prospect
Village Board, proclaim the following:
That January 15, 2019, shall be designated as a day on which Irvana K.
Wilks is officially commended for her outstanding service to the Village of
Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission, and that she will always be
welcome to share her wisdom, experience and eloquence as an Emeritus
member of the Commission; and that this Proclamation be presented to her
to serve as a reminder of her valuable contribution to our community. le
