MAYOR'S REPORT Subject 3.4 Proclamation: Acknowledging the Contributions of Gerald "Skip" Farley and Janice Farley to the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission Access Public Type Information Public Content Administrative Content A J&nice 1:..'arley proclamati&n.pdf (1.8 KB) Skip &r Executive Content https://www.boarddocs.com/il/vomp/Board.nsf/Public 11/20/2018 A PROCLAMATION ACKNOWLEDGING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF GERALD "SKIP" and JANICE FARLEY TO THE MOUNT PROSPECT SISTER CITIES COMMISSION WHEREAS, GERALD "Ship" FARLEY has proudly served the Village of Mount Prospect honorably and with great renown for 28 years, beginning in 1978 as a member of the Mount Prospect Plan Commission, was elected to the office of Village Trustee for two and a half terms beginning in 1979, and in 1989 began his historic tenure as Mayor for an unprecedented sixteen years, and continued his service as a distinguished member of the Mount Prospect Sister Cites Commission and the Centennial Commission in joint appointments with his wife JANICE FARLEY; and WHEREAS, the Village and the Sister Cities Commission recognize that the Commission owes its inception to the inspirational leadership of GERALD "Ship" FARLEY who during his service as mayor formed an exploratory committee to establish a Sister City with Mount Prospect based on the core values of friendship, respect and a desire to build relationships to create a more peaceful world through cultural exchanges and ideas; and WHEREAS, in 2000, a relationship was solidified when, as Mayor, GERALD "Ship" FARLEY and his wife Janice Farley and Severe's then Mayor Francois Kosciusko- Morizet and his wife Benedicte visited each other homes; and WHEREAS, the fellowship developed and resulted in the formal recognition and agreement between the City of Sevres and Mount Prospect to commence an official Sister Cities relationship; and WHEREAS, during their 18 year tenure with the Commission, the Village of Mount Prospect and the City of Sevres continue to enjoy and benefit from a thriving relationship that transcends mayoral elections and the test of time in no small part due to the passionate commitment of GERALD "Ship" and JANICE FARLEY and due to the deep friendship established between the Farleys and the Kosciusko-Morizet families that transcends an ocean and language differences; and WHEREAS, in 2011, the Illinois Sister Cities Association awarded the Village of Mount Prospect the Sister City of the Year Award for its impressive schedule of cultural events including the French Farmers Market, French wine -tasting events, French trivia nights and Pot Luck dinners; and WHEREAS, GERALD "Ship" and JANICE FARLEY championed the erection of a peace pole as a gesture of friendship and goodwill in the heart of our downtown with the words `May Peace Prevail on Earth" in both English and French, serving as a lasting reminder of the respect and admiration between our two cities; and WHEREAS, without the dedication and commitment of GERALD "Ship" and JANICE FARLEY, the Sister Cities Commission would not have flourished and prospered to become the cultural and educational institution it is today; and WHEREAS, GERALD "Ship" and JANICE FARLEY have elected to retire from service to the Village of Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission at the end of their appointment terms in 2018. NOW, THEREFORE I, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim November 20, 2018 as a day of recognition for Gerald "Ship and Janice Farley for their significant contributions to the Village of Mount Prospect and wish them well as they step away from the spotlight leaving behind a legacy of kindness, graciousness and unwavering spirit of community that will continue to inspire and influence future commissioners for many years to come. In recognition of their leadership, service and invaluable wisdom that can still be imparted I also proclaim them to be "emeritus" members of the Commission who will be welcomed with open arms at Commission meetings and events.
