MAYOR'S REPORT 3.1 ACCOLADES: Proclamation: Black History Month — February 2018 Public Information Administrative Content Executive Content https://www.boarddocs.com/il/vomp/Board.nsf/Public 1/1 PROCLAMATION "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" FEBRUARY, 2018 WHEREAS, during National African American History Month, we honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of African Americans; and WHEREAS, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which, in 1976, was expanded to the entire month of February to recognize and celebrate contributions of African-Americans to our nation's culture and history; and WHEREAS, throughout our Nation's History, African Americans from all walks of life have offered their talents to the betterment of American Society. Through their extraordinary accomplishments, these leaders helped bring our Nation closer to fulfilling its founding ideas; and WHEREAS, from the beginning of our Republic, free people of African descent have seen themselves as citizens, members of society, and therefore due equal rights. To recognize the efforts of those who have fought for social justice in our nation, the 2018 Black History Month theme, "African Americans in Times of War," honors those brave men and women who served their countries in the armed forces, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the American ideals of freedom and democracy; and WHEREAS, throughout "Black History Month," we celebrate the many contributions African Americans have made to our Nation, and we are reminded of their courage in their struggle to change the hearts and minds of our citizens. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February, 2018 as "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" and I encourage all individuals to take advantage of opportunities to educate themselves and raise awareness and appreciation of the history and contributions of African-Americans to our great nation, while striving to eliminate even the most minute evidence of discrimination towards all individuals. Arlene A. Juracek Mayor ATTEST: Karen M. Agoranos Village Clerk Dated this 6th day of February, 2018
