MAYOR'S REPORT Subject 3.2 A Resolution Supporting the 12th Annual National Dump the Pump Day - June 15, 2017 {This resolution supports the Village of Mount Prospect's participation in the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) 12th Annual National Dump the Pump day which encourages people to use public transportation for a day with the hope the experience will turn into habit}. Type Action Information On June 15, 2017, American Public Transportation Association (APTA), and public transportation systems across the country will celebrate the 12th Annual National Dump the Pump Day. With the continued fluctuation of gas prices, the Regional Transportation Authority, Northwest Municipal Conference and Mount Prospect will join with other public transportation systems, regional councils of governments and municipalities to encourage people to ride public transportation. Public transportation offers many benefits including saving time and money, preserving the environment, creating jobs, and improving quality of life. According to the April 2016 APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two -person household can save an average of more than $9,312 annually by downsizing to one car. Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies with $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns. The Dump the Pump promotion is aimed at getting people to try transit for one day with the hope that they will turn that experience into a habit. Alternatives: 1. Final Resolution: Motion Carries Yea: William Grossi, Eleni Hatzis, Paul Hoefert, Richard Rogers, Colleen Saccotelli, Michael Zadel hftp://www.boarddocs.com/il/Vomp/Board.nsf/Public 1 /1 RESOLUTION A RESOL UTION S UPP OR TING THE 12th ANNUAL NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY ON JUNE 15, 2017 WHEREAS, June 15, 2017 marks the 12th annual National Dump the Pump Day as a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, revitalize communities, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life for all Americans; and WHEREAS, people who ride public transportation in Northeastern Illinois can save up to $11,041 per year, based on today's gas prices, the cost of owning a car and the average unreserved parking rate; and WHEREAS, the Regional Transportation Authority system ridership has exceeded 600 million for each year since 2006; and WHEREAS, Millennials have surpassed Generation X'ers and Baby Boomers as the largest share of the labor force and they demand good mass transit; and WHEREAS, more than 60% of those who commute to Chicago's Loop from outside Chicago's downtown use transit; and WHEREAS, for every $1 billion invested in public transportation supports and creates more than 50,000 jobs; and WHEREAS, U.S. home values performed 42 percent better on average if they were located near public transportation with high -frequency service; and WHEREAS, U.S. public transportation use in the United States reduces our nation's carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually; and WHEREAS, public transportation plays a major role in maintaining the vitality of many municipal business districts and provides an option for our residents to commute without using their automobile. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION ONE: The Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby join with other public and private bodies across the country to participate in the 12TH ANNUAL NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY to encourage transit ridership. SECTION TWO: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
